How Male Sexual Enhancement Supplements Work?
Erectile Dysfunction (ED) is a common condition in which a person is unable to achieve or maintain an erection for satisfactory sexual performance. According to a study published in BJU International, it is a surprisingly common problem, affecting 3–76.5% of men globally.
Male sexual enhancement supplements are said to help improve sexual health performance and treat intimate issues, such as ED.
These supplements, also known as aphrodisiacs, usually contain a variety of ingredients, such as herbs, vitamins, minerals, and other compounds, which often claim to enhance sex drive or libido, increase stamina, improve erectile function, and support overall sexual well-being, said Dr Sanjay Prakash J, Consultant Microsurgical Andrologist and Urologist, AINU, Chennai.
According to him, some supplements claim to improve blood flow to the genitals, which may help with achieving and maintaining erections. Others contain certain ingredients that may influence hormone levels, such as testosterone, which can affect libido and sexual function.
Are They Effective?
According to a 2021 study published in the Arab Journal of Urology, ingredients such as ginseng and tribulus terrestris, commonly used in sexual enhancement supplements, showed the most promising results in managing erectile dysfunction.
However, there is limited research to support this claim, and most supplements for sexual function have not been studied scientifically, as per Harvard Health Publishing.
It's important to note that the efficacy and safety of supplements can vary, and their use should be approached with caution, said Dr Prakash.
He further added that, in some cases, these supplements may interact with medications or exacerbate underlying health conditions. For example, individuals with cardiovascular issues should use caution with supplements that claim to enhance blood flow, as they could potentially worsen their condition.

Do Not Overlook The Side Effects
Speaking with the OnlyMyHealth team, Dr Sanjeev S Tonshal, Consultant, Urology, Aster CMI Hospital, Bengaluru, said, “Many supplements lack regulation and may contain undisclosed ingredients or contaminants, posing health risks.”
Some of the potential side effects may include:
- Headaches
- Nausea
- Digestive issues
- Increased heart rate
- Insomnia
- Allergic reactions
Furthermore, relying on supplements for sexual performance may lead to psychological dependence and anxiety, warned Dr Tonshal.
Who Should Avoid Taking These Supplements?
Male enhancement supplements are not the type of medication anyone can prescribe or take. You have to take it with the proper guidance of a urologist or someone who practices sexual medicine, Dr Vikas Agarwal, Director and HOD-Robotic Urology, Kidney Transplant, Uro Oncology, Andrology, and Male Infertility, Aakash Healthcare, New Delhi, told the OnlyMyHealth team.
Those taking any cardiac medications should specifically avoid taking these pills, as they can increase one’s heart rate and blood pressure and can lead to throbbing headaches, the doctor warned.
People taking medications, especially blood thinners, and individuals with allergies to any ingredients in the supplements should avoid taking sexual enhancement supplements, advised Dr Prakash, adding that it is not recommended for underage individuals.
Expert’s Recommendations
For those of you considering supplements to enhance sexual functions, it is extremely important to consult a healthcare professional before making the decision. You can also avoid the hassle by resorting to natural remedies, such as:
- Eating a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains
- Regular physical activity helps improve blood flow, boosts energy levels, and can enhance mood
- Practise relaxation techniques to alleviate stress, as it can impair sexual functions
- Getting enough quality sleep
- Building emotional intimacy with your partner through open communication, affection, and spending quality time together
- Men who experience sexual and reproductive health issues must consult an andrologist.
Bottomline
Sexual health is of utmost importance, more so because so many people refrain from talking about it and overlook the damage ignorance can cause to overall health. However, when it comes to approaching sexual enhancement supplements for improving sexual function, it should be done with caution. One must consult with a doctor before starting any new supplement regimen, especially if you have underlying health conditions or are taking medications.
