If you follow Indian footballer Sunil Chhetri, you probably know how he swears by cold showers in the morning. In an interview with a media channel, the 40-year-old shared, "I wake up at 6 am. Then do my preparation. I drink warm water. Take a cold shower. Highly advise everyone. The first thing you do is take a cold shower. Even in Delhi winters. The colder, the better it is. You won’t die. Your recovery happens faster and even weight loss. You must try it."
Just like Chhetri, many fitness experts recommend cold showers in the morning. Some fitness enthusiasts also indulge in ice bathing, which is said to speed up muscle recovery and improve circulation.

According to Dr Sunita Nagpal, General Physician and Gynaecologist, Salubritas Medical Center, South Delhi, cold showers help wake you up instantly by increasing heart rate and blood flow. She explained, "When cold water hits the skin, blood vessels constrict, forcing blood to move to vital organs. This improves circulation and oxygen supply, making you feel more refreshed."
Additionally, cold water hitting the skin triggers a fight-or-flight response, which leads to an increased heart rate and blood flow, which improves mental focus and alertness.
Some studies also suggest that cold water can boost the immune system, keeping illnesses at bay. In fact, a 2016 study published in the journal PLOS One found that people who switched to taking cold showers for 30-90 seconds daily for 90 days reported a 29% reduction in sick days taken from work.
Is It Safe To Take A Cold Shower On A Winter Morning?
“Taking a cold shower on a winter morning can be safe for most people, but it depends on how your body responds to the cold,” Dr Nagpal noted.
She explained, “If you are used to cold showers, your body might handle it well. However, if you are not accustomed to them, sudden exposure to cold water in winter can cause a shock to the system. This may lead to discomfort, dizziness, or a sudden drop in body temperature.”
Therefore, it is important to listen to your body and start with lukewarm water before switching to cold if necessary.
Who Should Avoid Taking Cold Showers?
While cold showers have several health benefits, they may not be suitable for everyone.
For instance, people with heart conditions, high blood pressure, or respiratory issues should be cautious, as the sudden cold can increase heart rate and blood pressure, which might be dangerous for those with cardiovascular problems.
Similarly, individuals with asthma or other breathing issues might find it difficult to breathe properly under cold water. If you have any health conditions, it is best to consult a doctor before making cold showers a daily habit.
