If you are planning to be pregnant then winter is the best season. During winter not only is the temperature pleasant, but there is a range of nutritious dishes to pick from. However, the season brings obstacles because pregnant women are at risk of different allergens and illnesses during this period. Though wearing suitable attire, staying warm and hydrated, and remaining active can make your maternity experience joyful and memorable.

You may wish to start your day late because of the cold winter mornings, but this might harm your health if you are expecting a baby. Firstly, if you are pregnant you cannot afford to miss your workout or breakfast. It is best to start your routine with a healthy breakfast and an appropriate workout programme.

Here are some important tips by Dr Dhwani Mago, Senior Consultant, Obstetrician and gynaecologist, for pregnant women during winter.

Drink Enough Water

During winter, you don’t usually feel thirsty, so it is important to hydrate yourself well. Drinking at least 2.5 to 3 L of fluids daily is essential. Water is required to make the fluid that surrounds your baby and helps in raising the volume of your blood.

Restrict Tea And Coffee

As tea and coffee can dehydrate you, restrict their intake to one or two cups. Instead of tea, you can have soups, coconut water and fresh juices to get the hydration you require .

Flu Shot Is A Must

“You must schedule your flu shot to avoid catching any viral illnesses,” says Dr Dhwani. Apart from flu shots, hands should be washed properly with soap and water, use hand sanitiser if necessary, stay away from ill people, avoid crowded areas, take medication on time as prescribed by the doctor, and wear a mask.

Stay Active

You can do gentle yoga regularly. A regular fitness regimen may help you stay healthy and feel your best during your pregnancy. It can also enhance your posture and alleviate several common aches and pains, such as backaches and weariness. There is evidence that it can help prevent gestational diabetes (diabetes that occurs during pregnancy), reduce stress, and increase stamina for labour and delivery. Getting enough sleep and some outdoor exposure under the sun can boost your vitamin D levels.

Skin Care

From morning sickness to dietary changes and skincare issues, your daily life begins to follow a different schedule in the process of taking care for yourself and your growing baby. Apply a good amount of moisturising cream all over your body to avoid skin irritation during pregnancy.

According to Dr Mago, you must follow a diet rich in proteins, vitamins and minerals. You can add fruits, vegetables, chicken, eggs, fish, nuts and sprouts to your diet. Avoid sweets and oily food to control weight gain and maintain your immunity. Finally, it is most important to stay happy and relaxed and do activities which make you happy.
