Do you feel the urge to move your legs when you lie down? You might have restless legs syndrome. Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a common medical condition of the nervous system. It causes one to experience an overwhelming and irresistible urge to move the legs. It tends to affect a person majorly at night and might even affect the sleep patterns of a person. The symptoms of restless legs syndrome might include:

  • Sensations in the calves, thighs, feet or arms 
  • Aching and burning 
  • Itching and tingling 
  • Involuntary jerking of the arms or legs 
  • Periodic limb movements

The symptoms of RLS can be intolerable, and the symptoms tend to worsen as the person gets older. Some people may experience a period of remissions or fluctuation in the severity of symptoms. But in most of the cases, symptoms usually reappear.  But there are some ways you can try to win over restless legs.

Exercise

Doing leg exercises can help your condition. Moderate exercise will help reduce the effects of restless legs syndrome. But do not indulge in a strenuous workout, especially the one that might lead to aches and pains.

Good Sleeping Patterns

A person who has RLS suffers from bad sleeping habits. It will be challenging, but it is important that you resolve these sleeping issues. It might not completely cure the problem, but it can help you improve your sleeping habits. You should sleep and wake up on time, keep the gadgets away, and try to sleep for at least 8 hours. 

Stretching

Stretching can help reduce the symptoms of RLS. It may also help manage the mood and improve stress levels, which will also induce sleep. Various studies have shown that yoga and stressing can improve the problem in people on dialysis.

Massage

Massaging your leg muscles can ease the effects of RLS. According to a study conducted by the National Sleep Foundation, a chemical named dopamine is released when you massage your legs, which could be the reason for providing relief to RLS symptoms. Massage relaxes the body and relieves stress. 

Healthy Diet

Eat a healthy diet rich in eggs, meats and whole grains to maintain iron and folate levels. If your iron and folate levels are low, you must consult a doctor and must take appropriate medication. Inadequate levels of iron and folate can lead to anaemia (a condition where your body lacks red blood cells.  A healthy diet can improve your overall health and ward off various health issues such as weight, cardiovascular diseases, mental health problems etc.

Walk around before Bed

A nice walk before you go to bed can also help in some ways. Don’t do aerobics or any other strenuous exercise that might keep you up. Just a walk around the block along with nature is good enough to curb the problem of restless legs.
