Everyday items that we touch, smell and see in our home come off as harmless as flowers, but little do we think about the health risks that they can pose. Well, it is a fact that a lot of chemicals appear on things that we use every day and which seems safe, but really aren’t. The list of offenders in your home can be exceedingly long, but here we list out 5 items that can do more harm than good.
Artificial sweeteners in the form of aspartame and sucralose trick the body to store more fat and thus, raise the risk of diabetes. So, if you are thinking of leading a healthy lifestyle, you should put all food and beverages with artificial sweeteners in the trash bin. Apart from causing an increase of diabetes, artificial sweeteners promote weight gain and other serious health problems such as heart attack and Alzheimer’s.
Come summers and we load the fridge with bottles of water and toss our left-overs in plastic containers. Whatever is in the plastic container gets exposed to endocrine-disrupting chemicals such as phthalates, bisphenol-A and bisphenol-S. The endocrine system is responsible for regulating mood, development, tissue function, metabolism, sexual function and reproduction. So, when these endocrine-disrupting chemicals get mixed with the food, they can cause reproduction problems, hypertension, hyperactivity that is accompanied by impaired learning and increased aggressiveness, reduced IQ in children and cancer of the prostate, breast and thyroid.
We find it acknowledgeable to routinely disinfect our body as well as the surroundings using antibacterial soaps/detergents. But, this practice can cause a lot of problems in the long run. Not only do antibacterial soaps and detergents promote the development of drug-resistant bacteria, but they also have compounds such as triclosan that have been linked to several harmful health effects. According to research, triclosan can cause allergies, endocrine disruption, weight gain, thyroid dysfunction and inflammatory responses.
Non-stick pans may be easy to cook food in, but they can cause detrimental effects on your health. An independent scientific review panel that advises the US Environmental Protection Agency had labelled that the chemical coating on non-stick cookware a.k.a. Teflon to be a ‘likely’ carcinogen. The problem with non-stick cookware is that when heated, the chemical coating vaporises into the air and can thereby cause you and your family a lot of health problems. Switch to ceramic or glass cookware.
Deodorizers for room usually contain 2, 5-dichlorophenol, a metabolite of 1, 4-dichlorobenzene, which has been associated with premature puberty and other health problems (even cancer). These deodorizers also have endocrine-disrupting phthalates. If you are having problems with unpleasant smells, try to address the root cause of it instead of subduing the stench. If you cannot find the cause of the problem, using other methods of making the room smell fresh may help. These include opening the windows and doors, use of high quality essential oils, etc.
So, start eliminating each of these offenders of health and well-being to ensure a safe and healthy life.
