When the blood sugar levels increase during pregnancy, the condition is known as gestational diabetes.

What Triggers the Gestational Diabetes?

The pregnancy hormones can block insulting from performing its function properly. Due to this, the glucose levels increase in a pregnant woman’s blood. The following things can trigger the condition or put you at a higher risk of having gestational diabetes.

  • When the pregnant women is older than 25
  • When the woman has a family history of diabetes
  • When the baby weighs more than 9 pounds or had a birth defect
  • When the woman suffers from high blood pressure
  • When there is an unexplained miscarriage or stillbirth
  • Woman is overweight before pregnancy

 

Complications of Gestational Diabetes

Most women who suffer from diabetes during pregnancy are able to deliver healthy babies. But if gestational diabetes cannot be managed carefully, it leads to uncontrolled blood sugar levels that and cause problems for the mother and the baby. The condition also increases the chances of a C-section to deliver. There can be some other complications like:

  • Excessive birth control
  • Early birth and respiratory distress syndrome
  • Low blood sugar levels in the baby
  • Type 2 diabetes in later stages of life of the baby
  • High blood pressure in the mother
  • Future diabetic conditions
