“I have never seen or heard of such a fish. But I must kill him. I am glad we do not have to try to kill the stars.” These lines were spoken by Santiago, the old fisherman in Ernest Hemingway’s classic, The Old Man and the Sea. Imagine if Santiago had to kill the stars to feed himself, it would have been a futile exercise and the poor old man would have died hungry.
But Hemingway’s Santiago is no fool, he is happy and content with the fish on his platter, he dreams of no stars.
Money, let it burn – Do not pay any heed to the crispy paper you hold between your fingers. They are as they say the root cause of all evil. I might sound like a phony trying to propagate unreal ideas. But think about it, money? Isn’t it the very thing that makes you unhappy? You are always in the search for money, some extra cash. The idea is to earn an ‘x’ amount that keeps you happy and content with what you have. Money gets you entangled in a vicious cycle; break free.
Possession – If you do not own anything, there is no fear of loss. Christopher McCandless also known as Alexander Supertramp gave up all his possessions to live a happy life in the wild. We watched his life with dropping jaws in the much acclaimed Hollywood film, Into the Wild. He swept aside material possessions to be fulfilled and happy with what we have around us, the great wide world. You will not worry if your brand new iPhone or the much loved Lexus just suddenly gives up working. All we really need is a bed to sleep on and a roof above our head; the rest is fad. Learn to give up and stay happy.
Do not Marry – Relationships keep you in a boundary. They do not let you be the free spirit child that you are inside. To get domesticated means to have all the trouble in life. Work, money, security, children and their education, keeping your spouse happy, keeping her family happy, getting a good home and it goes on and on and on. It is a constant process of being unhappy, as being unhappy is innate in beings.
Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish – The world is a depressing place to be in. The morning newspaper is not the right way to start a day. It leaves you hopeless. Be ignorant; be foolish, a fool can never be unhappy. He has made up his own world and is never hungry for more. Haven’t you read or heard of enough deaths, rapes or atrocities already? Don’t trouble yourself, just let it be.
The crux is to ‘be simple’. Do you remember yourself as a child? Rewind your memory and think of the sunlit childhood haze, running with open palms that hit the wind. No possession, no bondage, no knowledge, just a fool who is living to experience God’s creation. Learn to be simple, and the run of life would be eternally childish, eternally happy.
