Zika Virus Cases Reported In Pune, Total Tally Rises To Six

Pune has reported a new case of Zika virus, bringing the total number of infections in the city to six. The latest case involves a 35-year-old pregnant woman from Ganesh Nagar, Erandwane, who tested positive for the virus. This area is notably close to the residence of the first reported Zika virus case in the city. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has been vigilant in its efforts to monitor and contain the outbreak.

Details of the Latest Case

The 35-year-old patient, who is currently 14 weeks pregnant, was confirmed to have the virus following tests conducted by the National Institute of Virology (NIV). According to Dr Rajesh Dighe, Assistant Health Officer at PMC, the woman is currently asymptomatic, but her pregnancy and the health of her fetus need to be closely monitored. "Her anomaly scan is due, and we will continue to observe her condition," Dr. Dighe stated. In addition to the new case, Dr Dighe mentioned that another pregnant woman, aged 28 and six months along, should also undergo repeated testing to ensure her health and the well-being of her unborn child.

Transmission and Symptoms of Zika Virus

The Zika virus is primarily spread through the bite of an infected Aedes mosquito, which is also responsible for transmitting diseases such as dengue and chikungunya. The majority of those infected with the Zika virus are asymptomatic or exhibit only mild symptoms. These symptoms can include fever, rash, conjunctivitis, body aches, and joint pains. However, the virus poses significant risks to pregnant women, as it can lead to congenital anomalies such as microcephaly, Guillain-Barre syndrome, and other severe neurological complications in newborns. Other potential health issues in infants exposed to the virus in utero include eye problems, hearing loss, and seizures.

Ongoing Surveillance and Testing

The PMC has been proactive in its approach to controlling the spread of the virus. Dr Dighe confirmed that all the samples sent to NIV had been processed, and six patients have been identified as infected with the Zika virus. "We sent over 20 samples to the NIV in the past week, and our health officials have been instructed to collect samples from expecting mothers in the Mundhwa and Erandwane areas," he said.

The city's current tally of Zika virus cases includes a diverse group of individuals: a 46-year-old doctor and his 15-year-old daughter from Erandwane, a 47-year-old woman and her 22-year-old son from Mundhwa, and the two pregnant women from Ganesh Nagar, Erandwane.

The PMC's efforts in surveillance, testing, and monitoring are crucial in mitigating the spread of the virus, especially among vulnerable populations such as pregnant women. As the situation develops, continuous vigilance and prompt medical attention will be key in preventing further cases and ensuring the health and safety of the city's residents.
