Pune has seen a troubling rise in Zika virus cases, with three new infections reported on Tuesday, raising the total count to 15, according to civic officials. The recent cases include two young pregnant women and a teenage boy, intensifying concerns over the virus's spread.

The newly reported cases involve an 18-year-old woman in her 28th week of pregnancy, a 19-year-old woman 23 weeks pregnant, and a 15-year-old boy. All three are residents of different parts of Pune, namely Pashan and Bhusari Colony in Kothrud. The 18-year-old woman began experiencing joint pain and headache on July 5. Her condition was later confirmed as Zika infection by the National Institute of Virology (NIV) on Monday. Similarly, the 19-year-old, who complained of a sore throat, had her samples tested on July 8, with confirmation of Zika infection coming on Tuesday. The 15-year-old boy had been suffering from rashes and fever since July 3.

The Growing Concern
As of now, Pune has 15 confirmed Zika cases, including eight pregnant women. Dr. Rajesh Dighe, Assistant Health Officer of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), stated that the first Zika case was reported on June 20, prompting immediate action from civic authorities. Despite these efforts, the city has seen a rapid increase in cases within three weeks.

On Monday, the PMC Epidemiology Department and Insect Control Department held a crucial meeting with representatives of private hospitals and doctors to devise strategies to counter the Zika threat. This meeting was chaired by Additional Municipal Commissioner Prithviraj BP, along with Dr. Kalpana Baliwant, PMC health officer, and included representatives from 52 private hospitals.
