It was only after an arduous 10-hour-long journey when the surgeons could remove what the ‘World’s Largest Brain Tumour is’. The enormous growth in the 31-year-old Sakthivel was growing inside his head for 20 years. The very thought of cancer and surgery deterred him from going under the knives as his very own brother succumbed to death during an operation. Due to money constraints, the tumour was left to grown, weighing 5 kg. As per the surgeons, this size of the tumour is recorded to be the biggest in medical history.
As told by the surgeons, the tumour was cancerous and was as big as his head. As per reports, Sakthivel is now tumour-free and recovering well from the critical surgery. Dr J Srisaravanan, the neurosurgeon who treated Sakthivel, stated, “He came to us in the second week of May with a humungous growth on his head. That growth led to a restricted neck movement.”

“He was afraid to go for a surgery as he lost his brother to one. Also, lack of monetary funds led to the delay of 20 years,” he added.
The operation was carried out at the Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai. The hospital was around 68 km from the patient’s hometown. Despite this humongous growth, Sakthivel never approached any hospital for treatment or consultation. He had no money to pay for his medicines and surgery. As the size of the tumour had grown to this extent, he started facing difficulties in moving his neck. As we know that the average human head weighs around 5kg, his tumour itself was of the same size when operated.

He was subjected to social aloofness as the massive swelling would make him feel uncomfortable in public places. Sakthivel first approached private hospitals where he was asked for a considerable sum for the surgery. This is how he reached the government hospital in Madurai. Dr Srisaravanan said, “We did a lot of study and research and have not found anything as big as this.”
Another such unusual case was recorded in Mumbai when 31-year-old Sental Pal was operated to remove a 1.8 kg mass from his head in BYL Nair Charitable Hospital.
