In a world where physical appearance plays a significant role, plastic surgery has emerged as a popular option for those seeking to enhance their features or address certain concerns. However, along with its rising popularity, plastic surgery has also become surrounded by a myriad of myths and misconceptions. On this World Plastic Surgery Day, we spoke to Dr Anmol Chugh, Consultant, Plastics and Aesthetics Centre, CK Birla Hospital, Gurugram, who dispelled common myths and stated the facts.
Myths And Facts About Plastic Surgery
Quick Fix
Dr Chugh said, “People often think that plastic surgery is a 'quick fix' to quickly achieving their beauty goals. However, it takes preparation, time, and diligence to ensure the best results. Depending on the procedure, it can take time for the body to heal and for the final results to become fully visible. Also, the longevity of the results varies depending on factors, such as the individual's lifestyle, the ageing process, and other external factors.”
The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery reports that cosmetic surgery has increased by 446% since 1997 and by 8% overall in 2007, while the number of men receiving cosmetic surgery has increased by 17%.
Vanity
Another common myth is that plastic surgery is only for vanity or cosmetic surgery. Dr Chugh added, “Many plastic surgery procedures are used to correct physical birth defects, and reconstruction after an accident or disease/cancer. Also, procedures like cosmetic surgery can help in boosting self-confidence.”
Expensive
Dr Chugh highlighted, “Many believe that plastic surgery is expensive and out of reach. The truth is that it all depends on the services you are getting. If done by a trained plastic surgeon in a good hospital, charges might be slightly higher, but it helps in ensuring patient safety.”

Informed Decision Question
One size doesn’t fit all
Dr Chugh said, “A plastic surgeon is like a tailor. He/she will customise surgery according to your body type and expectations. Every patient undergoing plastic surgery should be aware of the technique that will benefit them and the level of experience a plastic surgeon has performing it.”
Risks
All surgical procedures carry risks like bleeding, infection, and swelling and plastic surgery is no exception. However, advancements in medical technology, stringent safety protocols, and the expertise of qualified plastic surgeons have significantly reduced the risks associated with these procedures. It’s important to ask all about the pre and post-surgery recovery part so that there are no surprises.

Results
Dr Chugh added, “While plastic surgery can make a difference in your appearance, it is not a cure-all. Results may not be immediate or permanent, and you may still need to make diet and lifestyle changes to help you achieve your goals. Depending on the procedure, it can take time for the body to heal and for the final results to become fully visible.” While procedures like facelifts and breast augmentations can provide long-lasting results, it is essential to have realistic expectations and understand that maintenance and follow-up care may be necessary to ensure the longevity of the outcome.
Bottomline
Plastic surgery offers a range of procedures that can improve both the aesthetic appearance and functionality of various body parts. By consulting with a qualified plastic surgeon, understanding the risks and benefits, and setting realistic expectations, individuals can make informed decisions about their desired procedures.
