In a time when there are more cars on the road than required, there is a growing need of promoting a much more reliable and an eco-friendly conveyance. To promote good health and encourage the use of bicycles, the UN celebrated June 3 as the World Bicycle Day, a step towards reducing the dependency on vehicles. Many take this step as a welcoming change towards promoting good health.  Also touted as a cheaper, reliable and a good source of conveyance, a bicycle comes with a host of health benefits. 

A US-based professor, Leszek Sibilski, play a significant role behind celebrating World Bicycle Day. He is a cycling enthusiast and has helped promote the campaign from the grassroot level. It all started with an academic project undertaken by him in his sociology classes. The project gained recognition from more than 56 countries after two of his blogs went viral.

Biking is associated with several health benefits, one of the significant reasons for introducing this day to the world. As per medical experts, cycling is a great way to keep your mind and body fresh and free of ailments. Following are a few health benefits of cycling: 

Improves cardiovascular health

Cycling helps in obstruction-free blood circulation. It is said that walking or cycling dramatically reduces the risk of cardiovascular deaths and strokes. Cycling is a full-body workout and requires the right amount of stamina. Enhanced stamina leads to better health and an immune system. 

Reduced risk of Type-2 diabetes

Cycling, which is a full body workout, helps in reducing the chances of Type 2 diabetes. A study was undertaken at the University of Southern Denmark. A total of 24,623 men and 27,890 women participated in the study. It was seen that most of the people cycling for longer years were fitter and had very few cases of Type 2 diabetes. 

Helps in shedding weight

Cycling gives your legs that definite shape and cuts that one wishes to achieve for a complete workout body! For years together, cycling has been touted as one of the most effective forms of exercises for a healthy mind and body. Those who are regular with cycling have a healthy BMI as compared to those who are on the heavier side. Cycling helps in lowering the body fat, helping you lose the extra flab.
