Arthritis is a condition that causes chronic inflammation and pain in the joints. This can worsen if you consume food that causes inflammation, and so, you need to watch out for your diet to manage arthritis symptoms and prevent flare ups. In this article, we list six foods and beverages that arthritis patients must eliminate from their diet to manage the condition.

Added sugars

Refined sugar is bad for overall health including arthritis. Sugar can cause inflammation, which can trigger pain in your joints that are affected with arthritis. Not just added sugar but food items that contain sugar needs to be avoided too. Candies, ice creams, sauces, soda, packaged fruit juices, canned fruits, etc., contain added sugar that you must avoid.

Foods that have gluten

Gluten is a protein that is found in some whole grains like wheat, rye, barley, etc. Some studies have found that gluten can trigger inflammation and worsen symptoms of arthritis. People who have acute gluten sensitivity (celiac disease), are at a greater risk of rheumatoid arthritis. Similarly, arthritis patients are most likely to develop gluten sensitivity as compared to others. This is why some experts recommend a vegan diet for arthritis patients but this needs to be confirmed with your doctor.

Food To Avoid For Arthritis Patient

High fat dairy

Dairy is not harmful but high-fat dairy items are not good for arthritis. While you can have skimmed or low-fat milk, you should avoid drinking high-fat milk. Similarly, you should avoid eating cheese as it has high fat content. Fat present in dairy is linked to inflammation and it is better to avoid them to reduce arthritis pain and damage to the joints.

Salt

Arthritis patients should limit their salt intake as salt is also a potential inflammatory food that may trigger arthritis symptoms. Not only do you cut down on salt in your food but also salty foods. Sodium present in salt can cause inflammation, which may get painful in arthritis patients. Besides, overconsumption of salt might also cause severe damage to your joints.

Thus, avoid eating high-salt foods including processed foods, canned foods, pizzas, pastas, cheeses, processed meats, to name but a few. Certain studies have also found that high consumption of salt might trigger rheumatoid arthritis.

Canned Juices

Added sugar is lethal for arthritis patients and canned juices are loaded with artificial sweeteners. No matter how healthy they advertise themselves to be, these are loaded with sugar that can trigger inflammation. To manage arthritis symptoms and prevent flare ups, you must avoid the consumption of packaged and canned juices. Have fresh fruit juices instead to get optimal nutrition.

Drinks To Avoid For Arthritis Patient

Alcohol

Alcoholism is a major risk factor for arthritis. Alcohol causes inflammation which can trigger and worsen the symptoms of arthritis. Consumption of alcohol on a regular basis can also lead to damage of bones and joints over time. It also increases the risk of other chronic problems. Thus, arthritis patients should avoid having alcohol to manage the conditions.

Diet is very important for management of any disease including arthritis. If you limit or avoid the consumption of the above listed foods, you can manage the symptoms and prevent its flare ups.
