Expert Shares Why You Should Never Juice Your Fruits! Here's What You're Doing Wrong

That colorful glass of freshly squeezed fruit juice might seem like the ultimate health boost. But according to a leading expert, you could be doing your body more harm than good. While fruits are packed with vitamins, minerals, and fiber, the process of juicing them strips away some of their most valuable components.

"People often think juicing is a quick and easy way to get their daily dose of fruits," explains Pooja Singh, Dietician at ShardaCare, Health City - Noida. "However, when you juice a fruit, you're essentially removing the fiber-rich pulp and skin. This drastically changes how your body processes the fruit's natural sugars."

The Fibre Factor: A Big Loss

Fibre is a crucial part of a healthy diet. It helps regulate blood sugar levels, keeps you feeling full, aids digestion, and can even lower cholesterol. When you juice a fruit, all that beneficial fiber gets left behind in the juicer.

"Without the fiber to slow down absorption, the natural sugars in fruit juice flood your bloodstream quickly," Singh elaborates. "This can lead to a rapid spike in blood sugar, followed by a crash, leaving you feeling tired and hungry again soon after."

Concentrated Sugar, Fewer Nutrients

Think about it: to make one glass of orange juice, you might use several oranges. This means you're consuming the concentrated sugar of multiple fruits in one go, without the bulk and fiber that would normally make you feel satisfied.

Furthermore, some delicate vitamins and antioxidants present in the fruit's skin and pulp can be lost during the juicing process. While the juice still contains some nutrients, it's not the same as eating the whole fruit.

What You're Missing Out On:

  • Sustained Energy: The fiber in whole fruits helps release energy slowly and steadily.
  • Better Digestion: Fiber is essential for a healthy gut.
  • Fullness and Weight Management: Fiber helps you feel satisfied, which can aid in controlling your calorie intake.
  • Potentially More Nutrients: You benefit from all the compounds present in the entire fruit.

So, What's the Better Option?

"The best way to enjoy the health benefits of fruits is to eat them whole," advises Singh. "You get the natural sweetness along with all the fiber, vitamins, and minerals intact."

If you enjoy smoothies, that can be a slightly better option than juicing, as you typically blend the whole fruit, including some of the fiber. However, be mindful of how many fruits you're adding to your smoothie, as the sugar content can still add up.

Bottomline

While a small glass of freshly squeezed juice occasionally might not be harmful for everyone, relying on fruit juice as a primary way to consume fruits is not ideal. For optimal health, prioritise eating whole fruits.
