Triphala is a staple ayurvedic medicine being used for centuries now. Traditionally called Triphala Rasayana,triphala is jam packed with wonderful nutritious value. The name itself suggests that it is a combination of three fruits. Amla, Baheda and Haritaki are the three fruit-herbs that come together to become triphala and do wonders to our overall health. Let’s understand the nutritional and medicinal values of the three triphala herbs. 

Amla

The sour berries, Amla, are very prevalent in Indian houses in the form of pickles or ‘mukhwas’ (mouth freshener). Whenever I complain about my damaged hair after putting a good amount of money in hair care products, my grandma tells me, “Eat amla and apply it to your hair as well. It will give you much better results than all those serums and shampoos you are using.” Amla is power packed with Vitamin C, amino acids, and powerful plant compounds like phenols, tannins, phyllembelic acid, rutin, curcuminoids and emblicol, according to research by the National Institute of Health.

Baheda

Baheda is known as Bibhitaki in Ayurveda and is used as medicine to cure viral and bacterial infections. Baheda is rich in antioxidant properties according to Journal of Pharmacognosy and Phytochemistry. The plant is constituted of Glucoside, Tannins, Gallic acid, Ethyl Gallate, Chebulinic acid which serves as an antioxidant, antimicrobial, antidiarrheal, anticancer, antihypertensive, hepatoprotective and antipyretic agent,” the study states. Given the number of medicinal qualities, it is used as a remedy for various ailments. 

Haritaki 

Another component of the trio triphala is Haritaki, a green little fruit of Chebula tree. According to a research study published in National Institute of Health, The Chebula plant is called as the ‘king of medicine’ in Tibet and tops the list of ‘Ayurvedic Materia Medica’ (a book having list of ayurvedic medicines). Haritaki is used as a remedy for many conditions like asthma, ulcers, heart diseases and so on.

NIH stated, “Triphala may exert actions similar to diabetic pharmaceutical drugs by inhibiting digestive enzymes and may decrease absorption of glucose through inhibition of glycolytic enzymes, thereby reducing blood glucose levels.” Triphala helps in balancing blood sugar levels of the body.
