Welcoming a newborn into the world is a joyous occasion, and as parents, ensuring their well-being is a top priority. One of the most crucial aspects of being a parent is making sure that your newborn has a robust immune system. This not only protects them against common ailments that typically affect newborns but also makes sure that their immunity has the right foundation to protect them from diseases throughout their lives.
Although there are a bunch of remedies and products out there in the market for newborn care, one continuously overlooked arena is Ayurvedic remedies for babies. To know about some Ayurvedic herbs with immune-boosting properties that can offer a gentle and natural approach to promoting the health of your little one, the OnlyMyHealth team spoke to Dr Ganesh Chaudhary, Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery, PHC, Darbhanga, Bihar.
Newborn Immunity
Newborns have delicate immune systems that are still developing. However, as per Columbia University, the immune system of a newborn is stronger than most adults against pathogens. The issue lies with the fact that their immune system is experiencing these pathogens that cause illnesses for the first time. An adult immune system, on the other hand, is developed against common bacteria, viruses, and fungi.
While most parents may be sceptical in choosing the Ayurvedic route for their newborns, Dr Chaudhary reassured, “Ayurveda is not here to entirely replace Western medicine. Ayurveda recognises the importance of balance within the body to promote overall health. Ayurvedic practices focus on enhancing the body's innate ability to defend itself while Western medicine is more symptoms based, and this principle is especially relevant when it comes to supporting a newborn's immune system.”

Ayurvedic Herbs for Newborn Immunity
Before listing the herbs that parents should consider adding to their newborn’s care regimen, Dr Chaudhary advised, “Choose organic, high-quality herbs to ensure purity and potency. Make sure you start with small quantities to observe the baby's response and adjust the herbs as needed. Always consult a healthcare professional before introducing herbs to your baby's routine.”
Tulsi (Holy Basil)
Firstly, Dr Chaudhary suggested tulsi for its antimicrobial properties that help protect against infections. He said, “Gently introduce Tulsi by adding a few leaves to the baby's bathwater or add it to the mother's diet if breastfeeding. The mother can chew 4-5 leaves of tulsi every morning.”

Ashwagandha
Second, he recommended Ashwagandha as it is a powerful adaptogen which supports the body's stress response and enhances overall resilience. “Administer Ashwagandha to the baby through a diluted Ashwagandha-infused oil massage. This will not only support their immune system but also help them relax.”
Turmeric
“Famous for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, turmeric can benefit the newborn's immune system,” suggested Dr Chaudhary. He prescribed that you should add a pinch of turmeric to the baby's food. If your newborn suffers a cut or any minor skin issue, you can also apply a mild turmeric paste to that area.
Guduchi (Tinospora Cordifolia)
Lastly, he suggested using Guduchi, which is also known as ‘Amrit’ or the nectar of immortality. “Guduchi is a potent immunomodulator,” said Dr Chaudhary, and suggested, “Add one teaspoon of Guduchi powder and boil it in one glass of water. You can give this to the baby directly or mother’s can include it in their diet to pass on its benefits through breast milk.”

By embracing Ayurvedic principles, you can contribute to your baby's overall well-being and set the foundation for a healthy life ahead.
