For years, a cheat day has been debated, but most nutritionists believe that planned indulgences can have mental and metabolic benefits if used correctly.

To understand why cheat days may be necessary and how to follow them safely, we spoke to Aayesha Parveen, Consultant, Nutritionist, Kinder Women’s Hospital and Fertility Centre, Bangalore, who explained the science and psychology behind this popular strategy.

1. Prevents Diet Fatigue and Boosts Motivation

Constant restriction of food leads to frustration, cravings and emotional burnout. Aayesha shared, “A cheat day helps break the monotony of dieting. When people know they can enjoy their favourite foods once a week, they stick to their routine more consistently.”

This small psychological break reduces feelings of deprivation and keeps you motivated to maintain healthier habits over the long term.

2. Helps Manage Cravings Before They Become Binges

Cravings don't disappear by pretending they don't exist; they generally get stronger. Planned indulgences can help you satisfy those cravings in a controlled manner.

Aayesha sexplained, “The objective of a cheat day isn’t to go wild, but to mindfully allow certain foods so that you don’t feel the urge to binge later.” This reduces the chances of impulsive overeating during emotionally weak moments in the week.

As soon as you restrict calories for longer intervals, the body naturally responds by bringing down the pace of metabolism. Giving one's system a slightly higher intake has been shown to regulate some of the hormones, such as leptin, which is responsible for satiety.

Aayesha added, "A cheat meal, particularly one higher in carbohydrates, can temporarily heighten energy expenditure. This slight metabolic boost helps the body recognise that it's not in a starvation mode."

The most successful diets aren’t the most restrictive; they’re the most sustainable. “Aayesha said, “People who include cheat meals tend to stick to long-term goals better than those following extreme, rigid plans. It's knowing you can participate in social occasions, family dinners, and weekend outings without feeling guilty that makes healthy living feel realistic rather than punishing.

Too restrictive dieting creates unhealthy patterns, guilt following eating particular foods, fear around calories, or preoccupation with good and bad foods. Cheat days give you balance and flexibility. “They help remove the emotional charge around favourite foods. You learn to enjoy them in moderation instead of associating them with guilt or failure," Aayesha explained.

How to Do Cheat Day the Right Way

Aayesha suggested following these guidelines in order not to invalidate the process:

  • Stick to a cheat meal, not a 24-hour binge.
  • Plan it in advance and don't let it be emotionally triggered.
  • Avoid very heavy fried foods in succession.
  • Stay hydrated, as these indulgent foods are loaded with salt and sugar.
  • Get back on track immediately the next day.
