Winter is coming and the time to shiver with chattering teeth is around the corner. Some people get out of their houses fully packed with sweaters and jackets, while some don't feel the need to overlayed their body. Have you ever wondered why? Even if the temperature and winds are same for everyone, still some individuals feel colder.. While some of us enjoy sipping tea in this chilly season, several people don't even get out of their blankets in these months. Onlymyhealth editorial team spoke to Dr. Anil Vardani, Director of Internal Medicine, BLK Hospital, Delhi, about the reasons behind some people feeling colder than others.
Is there a difference between being cold and feeling cold?
Yes, being cold and feeling cold are two very different things. While, being cold is considered to be dangerous, feeling cold is not. Apparently, when the body temperature reduces, even just slightly, hypothermia can set in and cause serious damage to the body. Feeling cold can happen while your body temperature remains normal but outside factors make you feel very cold. Moreover, feeling cold can even cause the body’s actual temperature to shoot while trying to preserve heat.

If you feel very cold, you can:
- Overlayer your body
- Have hot food and beverages
- Wear a cap and socks
- Get active
- Wear something made of wool
Reasons to feel colder than others
Is there anything wrong with your body if you feel excessively colder than others? There are many reasons behind some people feeling colder than others. According to Dr. Anil, the major causes of this feeling are:
1. Less fat
It's pretty clear that people with more fat under their skin have a higher chance of saving themselves from the chilly winter season. People with less fat face difficulty and feel more cold than others. Apparently, in healthy people, physiological systems prevent hypothermia from occurring. This is a general variation without any disease.
Hypothyroid is very common disease in too many patients. If you're not having the classical sign and symptoms of the hypothyroid disease but are having low thyroid hormone in the body. That’s the reason why you are feeling more cold.

It has also been observed that maximum women feel more cold than men. It's a genetic factor about their varying body temperatures. So, this is also one of the reasons behind some people feeling colder than the others.
Sleep and lethargy
Your body does not produce enough heat if you are lethargic and sleepy the whole day. It is important to maintain a proper sleeping pattern for the functioning of your body.
Another reason why some people might feel colder than others is due to the age factor. Your body gets less capable of regulating temperature once you start getting older.
