Feeling feverish, getting chills, coughing, and having a sore throat can all be signs of the flu, or influenza. While you may identify these symptoms with COVID-19, flu infections have existed long before the coming of the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there are around 100 crore cases of seasonal influenza annually, including 30-50 lakh cases of severe illness. On a more severe note, flu infections alone cause 2.9–6.5 lakh respiratory deaths each year. The global health body suggests that vaccination is the best way to prevent influenza, along with precautionary measures like washing hands with soap and wearing masks. However, not many understand the importance of flu shots, and many wonder when it is a good time to get them in India. Here's what an expert has to say about the same.

About Flu And Its Symptoms![]()
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) describe influenza, or the flu, as a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. The viruses are said to spread by tiny droplets released when people with flu cough, sneeze, or talk, which can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby. Very rarely can a person get the flu by touching a surface or object that has the flu virus on it.
Common symptoms include:
- Fever and chills
- Cough
- Sore throat
- Runny or stuffy nose
- Muscle or body aches
- Headaches
- Fatigue
- Vomiting and diarrhoea are more common in children than adults.
These symptoms can start showing in one or four days after infection and usually last around a week.
Role Of Flu Vaccination![]()
According to the WHO, vaccination is the best way to prevent influenza. In fact, flu vaccines have been used for over 60 years. While there is no guarantee that flu vaccines will prevent flu infections, experts believe that the shots can strengthen immunity and reduce the risk of severe illnesses.

When Is The Best Time To Get Flu Shot In India?
In India, the flu season typically peaks during the monsoon and winter months. However, it's recommended to get the flu shot before the onset of the peak season to allow for maximum protection, Dr Divya Gopal, Consultant - Internal Medicine, Sir H.N. Reliance Foundation Hospital, tells the OnlyMyHealth team.
She adds, "While it's generally best to get vaccinated in the pre-monsoon period (April-May), it's still beneficial to get the shot even later in the year."
For most people who need only one dose of influenza vaccine for the season, September and October are generally good times to be vaccinated against influenza, according to the CDC, adding that everyone should be vaccinated by the end of October ideally.
However, it is crucial to take various factors into account and speak to a healthcare provider to discuss what works best for you.
Who Should Consider Getting The Flu Shot?![]()
Here are individuals at high risk for flu complications and those who should consider getting the vaccines:
- Children under 5 years old
- Adults over 65 years old
- Pregnant women
- People with chronic health conditions (e.g., heart disease, asthma, diabetes)
- Healthcare workers
But if you have had any recent health issues or allergies, it's important to inform your healthcare provider before getting vaccinated. This will help them determine if the vaccine is safe for you, advises Dr Gopal.
What To Expect When You Get A Flu Shot?
The flu shot is generally well-tolerated, but some people may experience mild side effects such as soreness at the injection site, fatigue, or muscle aches, says Dr Gopal, adding that these symptoms usually subside within a few days.
