- Nutrient deficiencies: IV vitamin therapy can help alleviate symptoms of nutrient deficiencies, such as anaemia, diarrhoea, and weight loss, particularly in individuals with malabsorption problems.
- Hangovers: IV vitamin therapy may help alleviate hangover symptoms, such as dehydration and electrolyte imbalances.
- Cancer treatment: High doses of vitamin C administered intravenously may help alleviate side effects of cancer treatment, such as fatigue and weakness.
- Asthma: IV magnesium sulphate may be beneficial for acute asthma attacks.
- Acute respiratory distress syndrome: IV selenium may help critically ill patients who require mechanical ventilation.
A 2018 study found this treatment to be more effective for children with acute asthma than using a nebuliser, a device that administers inhalation medications through a face mask or mouthpiece.

Dr Kiran highlighted, “It is essential to note that IV vitamin therapy is not a substitute for a healthy diet and lifestyle, and its effectiveness for other uses is not well established. Also, this therapy carries risks, such as blood clots, infections, and nutrient overdose, and should only be administered by a trained healthcare professional.”
There is no solid evidence supporting the effectiveness of IV drip therapy, and it is not an approved treatment method. Therefore, despite the claims made by some practitioners, it is not recommended.
