A healthy and balanced diet includes a rich supply of vitamin B complex. It serves as the building blocks of a healthy body and helps in carrying out the metabolic functions in your body. Most people often take vitamin B supplements to meet the optimal levels of vitamins in their bodies. However, in case of excessive consumption, it may lead to several health conditions, such as nausea and liver damage. We spoke to our expert Dr Bimal Chhajer, Cardiologist, Former Consultant, AIIMS and Director, SAAOL Heart Centre, New Delhi, who explained the complications of taking excessive vitamin B.

Vitamin B is a group of eight distinct vitamins, each with its unique functions and sources. These include B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin), B3 (niacin), B5 (pantothenic acid), B6 (pyridoxine), B7 (biotin), B9 (folate), and B12 (cobalamin). These vitamins play key roles in energy production, metabolism, cell growth, and the synthesis of red blood cells.

According to the findings of The Permanente Journal, B vitamins serve diverse functions, such as facilitating energy release through metabolism and sustaining the nervous system. Vitamin B complex proves beneficial for addressing sleep disturbances, irritability, fatigue, anaemia, mental health symptoms, dermatitis, and other conditions. Inadequate levels of B vitamins may result in neurological and physical complications.

Symptoms of Vitamin B Overdose

The symptoms of vitamin B overdose can vary depending on the specific type of Vitamin B consumed in excess. However, common symptoms may include:

  • Nausea and Vomiting: Excessive intake of vitamin B can irritate the digestive system, leading to nausea and vomiting.
  • Skin Rashes: Some people may experience allergic reactions or develop skin rashes as a result of vitamin B overdose.
  • Nerve Damage: Certain B vitamins, such as B6, can cause nerve damage when consumed in excessive amounts. Symptoms may include numbness, tingling sensations, and difficulty walking.
  • Liver Damage: High doses of certain B vitamins, particularly niacin (B3), can lead to liver damage and dysfunction.
  • Gastrointestinal Disturbances: Excessive vitamin B intake can disrupt normal gastrointestinal function, leading to diarrhoea, abdominal cramps, and bloating.
  • Increased Risk of Blood Clots: Excessive vitamin B supplementation, particularly with B6 and B12, has been associated with an increased risk of blood clot formation.

Dangers of Excessive Vitamin B Intake

Dr Chhaje said, “Overconsumption of vitamin B has been associated with an increased chance of experiencing specific cardiovascular complications, such as irregular heart rhythms, palpitations, and exacerbation of pre-existing heart conditions. Also, excessive intake may lead to flushing, elevated heart rate, and liver damage.”

He added, “Excessive intake of vitamin B3, commonly referred to as niacin, could pose risks to cardiovascular well-being. While essential for various bodily functions, including lipid, protein, and carbohydrate metabolism, an overabundance of niacin may lead to adverse consequences.”

Dr Chhajer highlighted, “When considering the use of supplements, individuals should exercise caution regarding their intake of vitamin B and consult their doctor, particularly if they have a history of heart issues or other risk factors associated with cardiovascular disease. It's important to maintain a balanced diet and refrain from taking too many supplements to support heart health and general well-being.”
