Nutrition is vital for the human body; proper nutrition helps us grow strong and healthy. A balanced diet supplies energy, supports growth and development, strengthens the immunity system, and helps prevent chronic disease and infections. Adequate nutrition is essential from the initial stages of life to old age as it influences physical and mental well-being. It also boosts daily performance and promotes longevity. 

“The need for nutrition differs among us at different ages and as people age, it is important to focus on food that promotes a longer and healthier life. Nutrition is also responsible for supporting the overall well-being of older adults. Knowing and understanding these needs and modifying our dietary habits are key to healthy aging,” shares Dr Khushali Lalcheta, Physician, MD (Internal Medicine), HCG Hospitals, Rajkot.

What is Nutrition? 

The process by which living organisms obtain and utilize the nutrients required for growth and energy along with maintaining various functions in the body is referred to as nutrition. The nutrients are critical for our body’s cellular processes, including repair of issues, energy production, building up immunity and maintaining overall health. 

What are key nutrients required for Older Adults?

  • Protein: To prevent muscle loss, which is also known as sarcopenia, it is crucial to consume adequate protein in old age. It is also important due to the loss of muscle mass occurring naturally at that age. Some lean protein such as fish, poultry, and legumes can be included in the diet to keep up protein intake. 
  • Vitamin D and calcium: Due to the risk of osteoporosis, bone health becomes a concern in old age. Vitamin D and calcium are important for maintaining bone density. Supplements, leafy greens, and adequate sunlight exposure are crucial to maintaining bone health. 
  • Fiber: With age, digestive health declines and it becomes crucial to increase fiber intake to keep the gut in healthy condition. Whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and legumes are excellent sources of fiber. 
  • Vitamin and Minerals: Vitamin B (especially B12), magnesium, and potassium remain essential for energy production, cardiovascular health, and proper function of nerves. It is essential to consume adequate vitamins and minerals to maintain the body’s ability to absorb certain nutrients. 

How Can Diet Influence Quality of Life?

According to Dr Lalcheta, “Diet plays a key role in promoting quality life in older adults by supporting cognitive functions, emotional well-being, and physical health. A balanced diet helps to prevent chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, or any bone-related issues. A good diet also promotes brain health and reduces the risk of memory loss and mood fluctuations. Overall, a nutritious diet enhances vitality, mental clarity, and emotional stability, allowing older adults to enjoy a more active, fulfilling life.”

On the occasion of National Nutrition Week, it is important to address the need for adequate nutrition among older adults. They are also at more risk of developing chronic ailments than others.
