Skin Pilling: Expert Explains What It Is, Its Causes, And Preventive Tips

Beautiful and glowing skin is a sign of good health and proper skincare. However, sometimes maintaining radiant skin can be challenging, especially if you are struggling with skin issues like pilling. Skin pilling is more or less similar to peeling where dead skin cells accumulate on the surface and form visible particles. We spoke to Dr Sharadi Shreemoyee, Founder/Director, Rejuve Aesthetics, Guwahati, who explained skin pulling, its causes, and how you can prevent it.

Why Does This Happen?

“Skin pilling occurs when your skincare products start forming flakes and uneven textures and this eventually makes it hard to get the smooth result that you desire”, said Dr Shreemoyee.

However, we must not forget that skin products are not the sole reason for skin pilling. Dead skin cells also play a crucial role. Sometimes skin sheds dead skin cells and reveals a new layer but in some cases, the shedding becomes excessive and out of control which ultimately leads to skin pilling.

“Another reason for pilling is the exposure to harsh environmental issues like extreme weather and pollution. These external stressors disrupt the balance that our skin needs”, added Dr Shreemoyee.

How Can We Prevent Skin From Pilling?

Dealing with skin issues is not easy and can be frustrating, especially when we’ve put in all our efforts and the result is not in our favour. But worry not, as Dr Shreemoyee lists solutions for you that will for sure knockout skin pilling.

exfoliation

Exfoliation

Exfoliation helps in reducing dead skin cells, which is why regular exfoliation is important. Exfoliation can make your skin appear more radiant and increase the absorption of topical skin care products, according to the American Academy of Dermatology (ADA).

However, choose gentle exfoliants that suit your skin type and with which the skin will not start pilling.  Choose the one that makes your skin feel good and with small particles. Make sure you don’t get excited and over-exfoliate. Exfoliating once or twice a week is more than enough to get the best result.

Don’t forget one thing, you can achieve the best result only by being gentle, exfoliating in a circular motion, not being harsh or pressing hard, and giving the product freedom to do its job.

cleansed-face

Apply Products On Cleansed Skin Only

“Make sure you cleanse your face properly before applying any sort of skincare or makeup products. Only use the cleansing product that suits your skin. This step will help you remove dirt, oil, and impurities from your face”, highlighted Dr Shreemoyee.

After cleansing your face, dry it and apply your skincare products one by one. Let each product absorb completely before moving on to the next. It is crucial to give each layer some time before moving on to the next step.

Another lifestyle measure that you should follow to prevent skin pilling is staying hydrated. You can also use moisturisers and lotions that help maintain hydration.

Bottomline

Dr Shreemoyee concluded, “By following these tips dedicatedly, you can help yourself to prevent the skin from pilling. Before buying your next skincare product, make sure you study your skin and what it needs.”
