Quarantine Constipation: What It Is and How To Deal With It

Coronavirus has not only put brakes on our fast-moving life but also our health and physical fitness. The restrictions have made us all nearly imprisoned in our homes. Besides, maintaining social distance, practicing healthy hygiene habits, sanitization, have become mandatory. Since offices are closed, most people are working from home. Well, we all know what happens in WFH. Late wakeup calls, afternoon naps, binge eating, laziness, lying on the couch are just some of the things. In between all this, ‘Quarantine Constipation’ has become a common issue. Most people are troubled with constipation and indigestion problems during the quarantine. What is it and how it can be treated? Get the answers in this article

Lockdown and Constipation

Constipation is a stomach issue where a person faces difficulty in passing the stool. Also, it gets difficult to digest the food which is primarily due to its unhealthy nature. Also, food is not only to be blamed but irregular sleep, poor physical activity and mental stress are also causing factors.

The problems arise when the body’s circadian rhythm is disrupted. It is your body’s natural clock that regulates the sleep-wake cycle. Your stomach has its own cycle which gets disturbed due to your schedule. During the lockdown, most people are suffering from this issue. It is so because this quarantine time has put restrictions on moving out and having a fixed schedule that we used to follow before this pandemic arrived.

Resolve your problem with these tips

Now that you know the reason behind constipation, let us tell you how to deal with it.

Hydrate yourself

Being at home and no sweating doesn't mean your body is hydrated and doesn't require water. It is of extreme importance that you keep yourself hydrated all day. Water is the one-stop solution for many health problems especially stomach issues.

You may drink normal water, infused water, lemonade, coconut water or even fresh fruit juice. Soda or alcohol don't count so keep away from these.

Watch your diet

Needless to say, we are snacking/eating more and active less during work from home. Most of us did end up panic buying which lead to stacks of snacks and ready-to-make food items in our grocery cabinet. We feel hungry every two to three hours and land up in the kitchen to grab something to munch on. This is triggering constipation.

  • To ward off constipation, add fiber-rich foods in your diet. Fiber helps in the easy passing of stool through the intestines.
  • Eat whole grains, lentils, legumes, green leafy vegetables, fruits and nuts.

Get active

The third important change you need to make in your lifestyle is physical activeness. What you eat needs to be worked out too. Workout at home with ease.

  • After every meal, take a brisk walk in the terrace or balcony or lawn, whichever is accessible.
  • Do dance for 30 minutes daily.
  • Practice yoga exercises.
  • Do household chores in between office work to avoid lethargy.
