Take Care Of Your Valentine's Health: Expert Explains 5-2-1-0 Rule And Importance Of Heart Health

February, the month of love, isn't just about chocolates and flowers; it's also about taking care of your partner's health. While expressing love is crucial, caring for your valentine's well-being is equally important. Men, here's a gentle reminder to encourage your valentine to stay active and aware of vaccines. As we celebrate love, we must also recognise that February marks American Heart Health Month—a timely reminder of the significance of cardiovascular wellness. We spoke to Dr Gandhali Deorukhkar, Gynaecologist, Wockhardt Hospitals, Mumbai Central, who explained how you can support your partner’s health and cultivate a shared commitment to a healthier lifestyle.

What Is the 5-2-1-0 Rule?

Love is about nurturing, and so is maintaining good health. Dr Deorukhkar Explained the simple 5-2-1-0 rule for a healthy lifestyle as follows:

fruits

5 Servings of Fruits and Veggies

You should encourage your valentine to consume at least five servings of fruits and vegetables daily. These nutrient-packed foods are essential for heart health, providing vitamins and antioxidants that boost the immune system.

2 Hours Max Screen Time

It is not a hidden fact that excessive screen time can lead to a sedentary lifestyle. Dr Deorukhkar suggested limiting screen time to a maximum of two hours a day. Use this time for physical activities or spending quality moments together.

1 Hour of Exercise Daily

Regular physical activity is a cornerstone of heart health. Advocate for at least one hour of exercise every day. It could be a brisk walk, jogging, dancing, or any activity that your valentine enjoys.

No Sugary Drinks

Cutting down on sugary drinks is crucial for maintaining a healthy weight and preventing heart-related issues. Hence, opt for healthy beverages, such as water, herbal teas, or other low-calorie beverages instead.

Yearly Health Assessments

“Regular health check-ups, including thyroid tests, tumour marker tests, pap smears, mammography, and bone density scans, are essential for early detection of potential health issues”, said Dr Deorukhkar. Schedule yearly check-ups to monitor blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and overall well-being.

Stay Updated with Vaccinations

Dr Deorukhkar added, “Rubella vaccine, influenza vaccine, DTAP vaccine, and HPV vaccine are crucial for preventing various diseases. Vaccinations play a pivotal role in preventing illnesses. Keep your valentine informed about the importance of staying up-to-date with vaccines to protect against diseases.”

Prioritise Your Heart Health

Heart disease is a leading cause of mortality for women, claiming a life every minute. According to a recent World Heart Federation (WHF) report, the number of deaths from Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) increased from 12.1 million in 1990 to 20.5 million in 2021 on a global scale. As the leading cause of mortality globally in 2021, CVD accounts for four out of every five deaths in low- and middle-income nations.

3-5 Times Weekly Exercise

Encourage your valentine to engage in physical activities 3-5 times a week. This could include cardio exercises, strength training, or a combination of both. The benefits of exercise include maintaining a healthy weight, improving cardiovascular health, and increasing well-being.

The Urgency of Health

Remind your valentine that health should not be postponed for tomorrow. Start taking proactive steps today to ensure a healthier and happier future together.

Heart Health Matters

While winning someone's heart is a significant achievement, it's equally essential to cherish and protect it. Advocate for a lifestyle that prioritises heart health, as a healthy heart is the foundation of a fulfilling life.

Bottomline

Dr Deorukhkar concluded, “This Valentine's season goes beyond the traditional expressions of love. Advocate for a healthy and active lifestyle, emphasising the importance of heart health. By actively supporting your valentine in adopting these simple yet powerful habits, you contribute to a future filled with love, laughter, and good health.”
