What do you understand by Fasting blood sugar levels test?

The fasting glucose test or fasting plasma glucose (FPG) is often done to screen for diabetes or diagnose diabetes. It is convenient to do and is not expensive. But unlike oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) it can miss some people with diabetes or pre-diabetes.

The fasting glucose test is done in the morning (after at least 8 hours of fasting) before you eat or drink anything even tea or coffee as it is most reliable at this time.

Diagnosis based on fasting glucose test

  • FPG <99 mg/dl is considered as Normal Fasting Glucose
  • FPG between 100 to 125 mg/dl indicates pre-diabetes (or impaired fasting glucose)
  • FPG >126 mg/dl indicates diabetes

If your blood sugar or blood glucose levels are elevated your doctor will recommend repeat testing on a different day to confirm the results.
