What Exactly Is A Weighted Blanket?
A weighted blanket is essentially a blanket infused with extra weight, usually with dense cotton filling. The Indian masses may refer to these weighted blankets as “razaayi”. Weighing anywhere from 5 to 30 pounds, these blankets provide a gentle, firm pressure similar to the sensation of being hugged or held.
This technique, known as deep pressure stimulation, wherein a tactile stimulation causes gentle pressure and makes the person feel like they’re being held or hugged. This is believed to have a calming effect on the nervous system.
How Does A Weighted Blanket Work?
Dr Gupta says, "Weighted blankets actually give the body a feeling of being hugged; the extra pressure from those blankets can relieve pain, reduce anxiety, decrease depression and the feeling of warmth and being hugged can actually make people sleep better. Most studies done with weighted blankets show that weighted blankets do have a significant effect in improving insomnia and quality of sleep and consequently daytime attention and function."
The blanket’s gentle pressure may also stimulate the release of oxytocin, commonly called the “love hormone.” This hormone, associated with bonding and comfort, helps reduce anxiety and promotes a feeling of well-being, making it easier to drift off to sleep.
Benefits Of Weighted Blankets According To Research
In a notable study, in contrast to those who had used the light blanket, those who had used the weighted metal chain blanket reported a significant decrease in the severity of their sleeplessness symptoms. Additionally, those who used the weighted blanket saw a significantly greater reduction in anxiety and depression symptoms than those who used the light blanket.
This secondary finding is in line with earlier research that demonstrates how mood can be significantly impacted by insomnia treatments.A number of short studies indicate that weighted blankets might provide significant advantages, but more thorough research is required. Other small studies uncovered the following.
Improved Sleep in Insomnia Patients: In a study of 120 people with insomnia, those who used a weighted blanket reported better sleep quality compared to those who used a light blanket.
Pain Relief: A study of 94 adults with chronic pain found that while weighted blankets didn’t necessarily improve sleep, they were effective in reducing pain levels.
Comfort for Children with Autism: In a study involving 67 children with autism, weighted blankets didn’t significantly impact sleep quality. However, both the children and their parents preferred weighted blankets over regular ones for their comfort and soothing effect.
