Probably you encounter this every other day. Little do you know, it might be an indication of high uric acid levels in your body. In this article, we will explore the causes of high uric acid, the warning signs to look out for, and the lifestyle changes that can help combat this condition.

Onlymyhealth spoke with Prof Dr Debabrata Mukherjee, the director of Nephrology & Renal Transplant at Max Hospital, Gurugram, to understand the causes and warning signs of high uric acid.  

Causes Of High Uric Acid

Overproduction 

One of the primary causes of high uric acid levels is an overproduction of uric acid, often associated with certain medical conditions like metabolic syndrome, obesity, and psoriasis. The body produces an excessive amount of uric acid during the breakdown of purines, leading to an imbalance. 

Dietary Factors

Your diet plays a crucial role in uric acid levels. Foods rich in purines, such as organ meats, shellfish, red meat, and certain types of fish, can elevate uric acid production. Moreover, excessive alcohol consumption, particularly beer, can contribute to increased uric acid levels.

Warning Signs Of High Uric Acid

1) Poor Joint Health

One of the most recognisable symptoms of high uric acid is joint pain, commonly known as gout. The pain typically affects the big toe but can also occur in other joints like the ankles, knees, wrists, and fingers. Gout attacks are often sudden, intense, accompanied by swelling, redness, and limited mobility.

2) Kidney Stones

High uric acid levels can contribute to the formation of kidney stones. These small, hard deposits can cause excruciating pain in the lower back and abdomen, frequent urination, and blood in the urine.

3) Fatigue And Discomfort

Elevated uric acid levels can interfere with the body's energy metabolism, leading to fatigue and overall discomfort. Individuals may experience a general feeling of being unwell, reduced physical endurance, and a lack of motivation.

Combatting High Uric Acid Levels

1) Dietary Changes

Making smart dietary choices is crucial in managing uric acid levels. Limit your intake of purine-rich foods and opt for a balanced diet that includes low-fat dairy products, whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. Staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water helps flush out excess uric acid.

2) Regular Exercise

Engaging in regular physical activity not only helps maintain a healthy weight but also improves blood circulation and aids in the excretion of uric acid through sweat. Begin with 30 minutes of exercise per day and engage in activities that you enjoy, such as cycling, swimming, or strength training.

3) Limit Alcohol Consumption

If you often find yourself enjoying the happy hours, it's because of that you have uric acids in the body. Limiting alcohol consumption or avoiding it altogether can help manage high uric acid levels effectively.

4) Weight Management

Maintaining a healthy weight is essential in preventing and managing high uric acid levels. Excess weight can contribute to increased uric acid production and put additional strain on the joints, leading to more frequent gout attacks. Incorporating a balanced diet and regular exercise into your routine can help achieve and maintain a healthy weight.
