An abnormal growth or development of cells on the surface of the cervix is termed as cervical cancer. Doctors have always emphasised on intake of certain vegetables which have cancer fighting properties. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, cancer-fighting vegetables are potent to disrupt the growth of cervical cancer.
Cruciferous Vegetables
According to Susan Lanza-Jacoby, a professor of surgery at Jefferson Medical College, number of studies on cervical cancer prevention has revealed that cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage and brussels sprouts have anti-proliferaton effects which can cease the growth of cancerous cells in the cervix. A natural compound called indole-3-carbinol containing Diindolylmethane (DIM) is found in cruciferous vegetables, which has been found to prevent cervical carcinoma.

Leafy Green Vegetables
Folic acid, an important vitamin B present in leafy green vegetables is known to improve cervical health. According to the Columbia University, folic acid reduces the inflammatory processes in the body. This could affect the development of cancerous cells in the cervix. To prevent cervical cancer, one needs to consume around 180 mcgs to 200 mcgs of folic acid daily.
Yellow Vegetables
Individual who incorporate high amount of yellow vegetables such as lettuce in their diet have a lower risk of cervical cancer. Yellow vegetables have anti-cancer compounds which prevent onset of cancer, and also give resistance against HPV infections that have potential to cause genital warts and changes in the cervix.
Reddish vegetables
Reddish fruits and vegetables contain a phytochemical nutrient called lycopene. According to American Cancer Society, lycopene fails to show any direct link with cervical cancer prevention. However, its properties have shown to suppress the chances of HPV infection, which can lead to cervical cancer. Increase your intake of vegetables and fruits such as tomatoes, watermelon and pink grapefruit to improve your body’s ability to fight the infection.

Berries
Other than aforementioned vegetables, fruits can be equally beneficial in preventing cervical cancer. Eat all types of berries to reduce the chances of cervical cancer. A number of immunity-building antioxidants are found in strawberries, blueberries, blackberries and raspberries. These antioxidants give your body strength to fight cancer more effectively. Berries are a rich source of vitamin C, which is well known for preventing cervical dysplasia. Vitamin C also suppresses the formation of cancerous cells.
For prevention and treatment of cervical cancer, doctors recommend at least five servings of fruits and vegetables daily.
