Hernias are caused when a part of lower intestine breaks through the abdominal wall. It results from the pressure put on the abdominal wall when u lift heavy objects, cough persistently, or strain with constipation.
Yoga Exercises to Treat Hernia
Single Leg Raise with Movement
- Lie down straight on your back keeping your hands on hernia region.
- Now raise your right leg, move it up and down without touching the ground for 10 times.
- After completing, raise your left leg and move it up and down for 10 times. Repeat the exercise for as long as you are comfortable.
Benefits: Increases the strength in your lower abdominal muscles.
- Lie down straight on the back with hands on hernia region.
- Now lift both legs two feet above the ground.
- In this position, alternatively lift both legs i.e. when we lift the right leg, the left leg will go down and vice versa.
- Do this for 10 times, take rest and then do for 10 more.
- After completing, rest your legs on ground.
Benefits: Helps to prevents displacement of abdominal organs.
- Stand in Tad asana. Shift your weight slightly onto the left foot.
- Keep the inner foot firm to the floor, and bend your right knee.
- Reach down with your right hand and clasp your right ankle.
- Bring your right foot up and place the sole against the inner left thigh.
- If possible, press the right heel into the inner left groin, toes pointing toward the floor. Make suer that the centre of your pelvis should be directly over the left foot.
- Keep your hands on the top rim of your pelvis. Make sure the pelvis is in a neutral position, with the top rim parallel to the floor.
- Bring your tailbone toward the floor. Firmly press the right foot sole against the inner thigh and resist with the outer left leg.
- Now, bring your hands together in Anjali Mudra. Stare at a fixed point in front of you on the floor about 4 or 5 feet away.
- Stay in the position for 30 seconds to 1 minute. Step back to Tadasana with an exhalation.
- Repeat for the same length of time with the legs reversed.
Other Ways to Treat Hernia
To help hernia heal, we need to take as much pressure off the opening as we can. This can be done by reducing the volume of intestinal contents.
Colon cleansing, fasting, intravascular fat reduction and intestine conditioning supplements are some means to aid the process. Proteins and vitamin C facilitate muscle building.
Truss to Treat Hernia
A hernia truss is a supportive undergarment designed to keep the protruding tissue in place and relieve discomfort.
If you have an inguinal hernia, a hernia truss can help you feel more comfortable — but it isn't a replacement for medical care.
