This creates a favourable environment for the growth of dust mites, mould, and other allergens, leading to the aggravation of conditions like asthma and hypersensitivity rhinitis. Dr Gowri Kulkarni, Head of Medical Operations at MediBuddy, highlights some of the most common respiratory illnesses during the monsoon and provides valuable insights into their management.

Prevalent Respiratory Illnesses During Monsoon

A study published in the journal Tropical Medicine & International Health stated that respiratory infections in India tend to reach their highest levels during the monsoon season. In their research, they observed that the majority of infections (43.8%) occurred during the monsoon season, closely followed by the winter season (41.7%), with the fewest cases reported in the summer season.

"Among the prevalent respiratory illnesses during the monsoon are influenza, the common cold, asthma, pneumonia, and bronchitis," said Dr Kulkarni.

"Influenza, a viral respiratory infection, is highly contagious and spreads rapidly in densely populated areas. The fluctuating temperatures and higher moisture levels during the rainy season create an environment that facilitates the transmission and spread of infections, contributing to the prevalence of the common cold," she added.

"For individuals who have already been diagnosed with asthma, the monsoon triggers can exacerbate their symptoms. The increased allergens present in humid areas act as catalysts for asthma attacks in susceptible individuals. Moreover, these moist conditions also elevate the risk of developing bronchitis," said the doctor.

Ways To Manage Respiratory Problems During Monsoon

To effectively manage respiratory problems arising from the monsoon season, Dr Kulkarni recommends some practical tips:

Use Dehumidifiers

"Indoor humidity can be reduced by using dehumidifiers, which help discourage the growth of mould and mildew that can harm respiratory health," said Dr Kulkarni.

Manage Allergies

"People who are prone to allergies should seek guidance from an allergist. These specialists can identify specific triggers and develop personalised plans to effectively manage the condition," she added.

Avoid Crowded Places

"Practising social distancing, especially when someone is showing symptoms of a respiratory illness, can significantly reduce the risk of transmission," she added.

Practice Good Personal Hygiene

Dr Kulkarni suggested that frequent handwashing with soap and water is essential to prevent the spread of infections that may lead to respiratory issues.

Avoid Smoking and Passive Smoking

Dr Kulkarni also advised steering clear of smoking and exposure to second-hand smoke, as they can significantly intensify respiratory problems.
