Wearing Socks To Bed Is Okay, But Here Are 3 Things To Consider

Nobody likes cold feet during the winter, especially when we’re asleep. It is probably one of the reasons why most of us have our socks on almost all the time, even during sleep. Sure, it provides warmth, but many wonder whether or not it is good for our health. We’ve even heard our elders show concern when it comes to sleeping with our socks on. Therefore, to get some answers, we spoke to Dr Pradeepta Kumar Sethy, Director, Gastroenterology, Medica Superspecialty Hospital, Kolkata.

Health Benefits Of Wearing Socks To Bed

There have been studies that have linked foot temperatures to sleep quality. Research published in the journal Physiology and Behaviour found that foot warming might help improve sleep in some people. However, researchers also established that its effectiveness weakens with age, particularly in those with insomnia.

The study further noted that older adults without sleep issues benefited from neutral-temperature socks and pre-sleep footbaths, while those with insomnia saw no improvement.

When asked whether wearing socks to bed is okay, Dr Sethy (who was not a part of the study) replied, saying that is completely fine and can offer several benefits.

He said, “Sleeping with socks helps maintain warmth and enhances blood circulation, promoting a comfortable and sound night's sleep.”

According to the National Sleep Foundation, wearing socks to bed may even "help you fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer.”

Another benefit associated with the feetwarming remedy is that it heals cracked heels, making it a practical choice for foot care during sleep.

Impact On Body Temperature

According to Dr Sethy, the practice of wearing socks while sleeping plays a role in regulating body temperature. Contrary to the misconception that it might overheat the body, it actually assists in cooling the core body temperature, he said.

Initially, bed socks can insulate your feet, trapping the natural heat your body produces. This can be helpful if you have cold feet due to poor circulation or a chilly bedroom.

Over time, wearing socks can actually promote heat loss through your feet, which occurs due to increased blood flow to your extremities caused by the warmth. It then helps transfer heat to the skin's surface, where it radiates outward.

This entire process is said to initiate and maintain sleep. While warming your feet helps trigger sleepiness, the subsequent cooling effect can help you stay asleep.

Things To Consider

While wearing socks to bed is safe, there are a few things to consider:

  • Opt for well-fitted socks, particularly in colder seasons, as they ensure warmth for the feet, contributing to a cosy and protective sleep environment.
  • Choose socks that aren’t tight-fitting, as they can obstruct blood circulation. Instead, wear breathable materials like cotton or wool.
  • Avoid wearing compression socks to sleep, ensuring a relaxed and unrestricted experience.

Conclusion

Socks or no socks in bed is a constant debate during the winter. But while there's no definitive answer to that, it all comes down to your personal preference. Of course, certain safety measures, like avoiding tight socks, are crucial, especially for people with diabetes or circulation issues. One must also choose breathable fabrics and ditch sweaty synthetics. At the end of the day, you must prioritise a good night's sleep, as it is essential for good health and well-being. Listen to your body's cues and do what is best for it.
