What is menopause?
Women, at the age of ten to fourteen, hit puberty and start their menstrual cycle. This time period is called menarche. This is when their ovaries start producing eggs, and the unfertilized eggs at the end of each month are shed along with the uterine lining, resulting in menstruation.
When women get to their early forties, their ovaries stop the production of eggs, which causes menstruation to stop. This is known as menopause.
Women from the age of forty to fifty-five go through menopause. According to different studies, the average age of menopause in Indian women is 46.2.

What are the symptoms of menopause?
About 1-2 years prior to starting menopause, women go through the phase of peri-menopause. This stage is an indication of early symptoms of menopause.
Women go through irregular cycles of menstruation during the peri-menopausal phase. This can last for about 2-3 years.
Due to the fluctuation of hormones, a woman can go through various symptoms like the following;

- Hot flashes
- Weight gain

With menopause comes a lot of problems. It decreases bone density in women and causes osteoporosis or bone weakness.

It is important to schedule an appointment with your gynecologist once you start detecting symptoms of menopause. They may be able to help detect some abnormalities that may occur in your body.
Women require frequent visits to their doctors to get guidance on their exercise and diet.
Mammograms are important and need to be done regularly. Ultrasounds and pap smear tests are also required, along with blood tests so that doctors can see if the individual requires hormonal replacement therapy.
Body weight and menopause.
Several studies have shown that being underweight can trigger early menopause. The more fat your body has, the more oestrogen it produces.
If oestrogen reserves are extra low due to an underweight body mass, it can cause early menopause.
The role of genetic factors.
It has been linked that genetic factors do affect menopause in women. Women whose mothers and sisters have experienced menopause early are also prone to the same.
