A research panel at the Cardiff University is looking at traditional remedies such as tea and honey to see if they can fight superbugs.

Health experts are worried as the bacteria are becoming increasingly resistant to antibiotics and fear that they will build-up resistance to the currently used antibiotics in the near future. Les Baillie, who is leading the research panel, stated that we may head back towards the pre-antibiotics days when treating serious diseases was extremely problematic.

Tea contains compounds called polyphenols that are capable of killing micro-organisms. Currently, the researchers are looking at tea’s ability to treat clostridium difficile, a bacterium that was responsible for at least 2,000 deaths and more than 24,000 infections last year.
