Pain, an inevitable facet of human existence, touches us all at some juncture. Whether a fleeting discomfort or an enduring ache, learning how to manage your pain can enhance our daily lives. We spoke to Dr Murali Thondebhavi, MBBS, MD - Anaesthesiology, Spine, and Pain Specialist, Apollo Spectra Hospital, Bengaluru, to learn about some practical approaches to alleviate pain.
Practical Approaches to Alleviating Pain
Nearly 30% of the global populace experiences pain. Some assessments from different regional pain studies suggested that the prevalence of chronic pain ranges from 30-40%, as per the Indian Journal of Palliative Care.
Here are the effective approaches you can follow to alleviate your pain.
RICE Method
Dr Thondebhavi said, "For injuries like sprains or strains need the RICE regimen - Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation. Rest the afflicted area, apply an ice pack, use a bandage for compression, and elevate the wounded limb. This effectively mitigates both pain and swelling."
Heat Therapy
"The application of warmth, via a heated pad or a comforting towel, helps in soothing muscles and easing discomfort. This method, especially valuable for muscular soreness and tension, offers respite from daily muscle pains," said Dr Thondebhavi.

Pain Killers
Dr Thondebhavi suggested that non-prescription painkillers, like paracetamol, are helpful in managing mild to moderate pain. Abide by recommended dosages and heed labelling advisories, ensuring responsible usage.
Distraction and Relaxation
"Channelling focus towards engaging activities, such as reading, movie-watching, or quality time with loved ones provides a welcomed relief from pain's grip," said Dr Thondebhavi. He added that integrating relaxation techniques, like mindful breathing and meditation, offers holistic relief.
Strategic Activity
A delicate balance between rest and movement holds the key. Dr Thondebhavi suggested that gentle stretches and low-impact exercises serve as effective countermeasures against stiffness and pain while respecting the body's boundaries.
Cultivating Positivity
Dr Thondebhavi said that nurturing a constructive perspective can influence one's pain perception. "Focusing on what can be achieved, rather than dwelling on limitations, offers a fresh outlook that pain doesn't dictate one's identity," he added.
When to Seek Professional Advice?
Persistent Pain
"When discomfort persists beyond a few days or intensifies, consulting a medical professional is important," said Dr Thondebhavi. He added that prolonged pain may signal an underlying concern requiring medical insight.
Acute Pain
"Intolerable pain impeding daily life or preventing restful sleep necessitates immediate medical attention. Addressing severe pain promptly is paramount to preserving well-being," said Dr Thondebhavi.
Post-Injury Pain
According to the doctor, if pain following an injury shows no signs of subsiding or worsening, an expert evaluation becomes necessary. This step ensures the absence of fractures or more severe damage.

Pain Coupled with Symptoms
"Concurrent symptoms like fever, numbness, weakness, or breathing difficulties alongside pain demand swift medical intervention. Timely action safeguards holistic health," said the doctor.
Medication Considerations
Dr Thondebhavi said that for those contemplating over-the-counter pain relief or prescribed medications, consulting a healthcare professional is paramount. Expert guidance safeguards against potential interactions and ensures suitable choices.
