Starch is a complex carbohydrate made up of long-chain sugar molecules. It increases blood sugar, and an excess of blood sugar signals our body to store it, resulting in weight gain.

If you're trying to lose weight, you should keep an eye on the starch-based foods you eat. Here is a list of six starchy foods you should avoid if you are trying to lose a few extra pounds. 

Potato Chips

Amongst all the starchy foods, potato chips are surely the worst. It not only contains extra flavouring, additives, fat, and sugar, but potatoes are high in starch.

The 200 calories of potato chips contain around 42 grams of carbs. It also has a dangerous amount of sodium and trans fat that can lead to obesity, heart disease, and diabetes. 

You can replace potato chips with healthy snacks like kale chips, celery, and apple slices with peanut butter.

Starchy Foods to Avoid to Lose Weight

White Rice

White rice is a staple food all around the world because it is easy to cook and versatile. But it is packed with calories and has a huge amount of starch. 

One cup of white rice has 200 calories, of which around 47 grams are carbs. It is also stripped of all its minerals and vitamins during the refining process. 

White rice should be avoided at all costs or replaced with brown rice, as it is a healthier option. 

White Bread 

White bread is a common breakfast food as it is cheap and easily available. But it is high in carbs and sugar, which causes weight gain. It is also high on the glycemic index, which causes insulin levels to rise and results in diabetes. 

A slice of white bread has an equivalent of 3.7 spoons of sugar, whereas a slice of whole grain bread has an equivalent of three spoons of sugar. Hence, it is a great replacement as it contains a comparatively lower amount of sugar along with being just as tasty. 

Refined Pasta

If you are trying to lose belly fat, you should definitely avoid consuming refined pasta. It is not only high in sugar but has had its fibre and nutrition removed.

Sugary Breakfast Cereals

It is common knowledge that if you consume an excessive amount of sugar, your body will convert it into fat. Sugary breakfast cereals contain added sugar and are high in starch, both of which contribute to weight gain.

Whole grain-based cereals act as a great healthy replacement.

Starchy Vegetables

Vegetables like potatoes, parsnips, and sweet potatoes are high in starch and do not help when you are trying to lose weight. An average serving of 150 grams of potatoes contains four tablespoons of sugar. 

If you are trying to lose a few extra pounds, it is essential to limit or avoid the aforementioned starchy foods.
