Pregnancy brings many changes, from glowing skin for some to breakouts or sensitivity for others. But one question that many expectant mothers have is: What skincare is safe to use? While your beauty shelf might seem harmless, certain ingredients can pose risks during pregnancy, from hormonal disruption to potential harm to the baby.
To know what’s better for expecting mothers, we talked to Dr Sanchika Gupta, M.D. (dermatologist and trichologist)/ skin specialist, The Skin House, Faridabad, and presented the basics to help you in this sensitive period. Whether it is the safest usage of certain things or their total prohibition, here is a doctor-approved list of skin ingredients to use and avoid in pregnancy.
Safe Ingredients in Pregnancy
Talking about pregnancy-safe skincare, Dr Gupta listed well-researched and mostly safe ingredients to look for during pregnancy. These are mild, efficient, and are usually prescribed by doctors. These include:
1. Vitamin C:
Vitamin C is an intense antioxidant that aids in skin lightening, evens out the skin tone, and promotes collagen generation. It is non-toxic and does not pose harm to you as well as your baby.

2. Mineral Sunscreen- Zinc Oxide, Titanium Dioxide
Chemical sunscreens can penetrate the bloodstream, but mineral (or physical) sunscreens lie on top of the skin and prevent the reflection of UV rays.”This is what makes mineral sunscreen safe to use during pregnancy and with sensitive skin,” Dr Gupta explained.
3. Azelaic Acid
Pigmentation and rosacea, and acne are frequently treated by its use. It is a naturally occurring anti-inflammatory acid, which is safe to take during pregnancy.
4. Niacinamide
It is also called Vitamin B3 and assists in reducing redness, spots, and patches on the skin. It is soothing, dermatitis-free, and aids in repairing the skin barrier.
5. Hyaluronic Acid
A water warrior. This ingredient attracts moisture into the skin and is safe even in the most delicate skin types.
6. Peptides
Peptides are beneficial for the increase in collagen and elasticity within the skin. “They are not toxic and are normally found in anti-ageing products that can be used by pregnant women,” added Dr Gputa.
7. Lactic Acid / Mandelic Acid (less than 10 %)
Low concentration alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) such as these provide gentle exfoliation that does not turn out to be harsh. According to Dr Gupta, “AHAs can be safe during pregnancy, but keep in mind that these should be used at low levels.”
8. Probiotics
Topical probiotics perform anti-inflammatory functions and stabilise the microbiome of the skin. They are becoming popular, and they are safe during pregnancy.
Ingredients to Avoid in Pregnancy:
The barrier to the skincare product can be broken through some ingredients, which may hamper fetal growth. In most cases, where more research is required, doctors tend to advise avoiding the following to be on the safe side:
1. Retinoids (Retinol, Retin-A, Tretinoin, etc.)
The retinoids are derived from Vitamin A, which is typically used in anti-ageing items. However, in pregnancy, they have been associated with birth defects, and they are highly discouraged.
2. Hydroquinone
Hydroquinone is also absorbed in the blood really quickly, and it is used in the treatment of hyperpigmentation or melasma. It is a drug that should not be used in pregnancy because of its potential systemic effects.
3. High-Strength Salicylic Acid (More than 2%)
With high quantities, salicylic acid can act like aspirin in the body. Although stronger versions (greater than 2%) can be quoted as being unsafe, in short-term application, low-strength versions would be considered safe.
4. Oil Sunscreens (Including Ingredient Oxybenzone)
“Oxybenzone has been shown to affect weight at birth and other developmental problems, as well as being a known endocrine disruptor,” said Dr Gupta. Mineral substitutes are a lot safer.
5. More than 5% Benzoyl Peroxide
Quite a common practice in acne therapy. However, the ingredient may be absorbed in smaller quantities. The strict concentration of more than 5% is generally discouraged, whereas some physicians permit a mild use.
6. Essential Oils
Some of the essential oils are not safe during pregnancy, although they are natural. Most of them may result in allergies or uterine contraction. Make sure to consult a doctor before using them.
7. Arbutin
This skin lightening agent is metabolised in the body to hydroquinone. It is advisable not to have it during pregnancy, although research is still in its nascent phase.
Dermatologist Tip:
"Pregnancy skin can be unpredictable; some women get that beautiful glow, while others experience breakouts or pigmentation,” says Dr. Sanchika Gupta, MD. “The key is to keep your routine simple, safe, and nourishing. When in doubt, always consult your OB-GYN or dermatologist.”
