Skincare Guide To Pollution Proof Skin During Diwali

As Diwali lights up the skies, your skin faces more than just the festive glow—it braves heightened pollution levels from fireworks, dust, and smoke, which can leave it dull and irritated. With the right skincare, however, you can protect your skin from these environmental stressors and maintain a radiant complexion.

Here’s your guide to pollution-proofing your skin, with expert tips from Dr Monica Bambroo, Head of Dermatology and Cosmetology and Director at Anugraha Skin and Laser Clinic.

"With Diwali festivities underway, your skin is exposed to more than just festive cheer; it faces heightened pollution levels, dust, and smoke from fireworks. The impact of these environmental factors can leave skin looking dull, clogged, and irritated," shares Dr Bambroo. "The good news? By following the right skincare routine, you can safeguard your skin from pollution damage and maintain that festive glow."

1. Start with a Deep Cleanse

Pollution particles can clog your pores, so a deep cleanse is vital. Choose a gentle, sulfate-free cleanser that removes impurities without disrupting your skin’s pH. Dr Bambroo advises a double cleansing technique: begin with an oil-based cleanser to dissolve makeup and pollutants, then follow with a water-based cleanser to clear any remaining residue. "This method ensures all traces of makeup, grime, and pollutants are removed, creating a clean slate for the skin to absorb nutrients," she explains.

2. Incorporate Antioxidants

Pollution exposure increases oxidative stress on the skin, leading to premature aging. A potent antioxidant serum, especially one with vitamin C, can help combat this. Dr Bambroo notes, "Vitamin C neutralizes free radicals, brightens the skin, and boosts collagen production to counteract pollution's aging effects." In the evening, switch to serums with niacinamide or resveratrol for further protection and a stronger skin barrier.

3. Lock in Moisture with a Hydrating Cream

The dry, smoky air during Diwali can dehydrate your skin. To counteract this, Dr Bambroo recommends using a moisturiser with hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, or ceramides. "These ingredients draw moisture into the skin, helping it stay plump and soft, even with increased exposure to pollutants," she adds.

4. Sunscreen

A quality sunscreen not only guards against UV rays but also forms a barrier against environmental pollutants. "Choose a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher," suggests Dr Bambroo. "Reapply every two hours if you’re outdoors, and look for sunscreens with anti-pollution properties for added protection."

5. The Power of a Weekly Detox Mask

Detox masks, like clay or charcoal, work wonders for unclogging pores and absorbing excess oil. Dr Bambroo advises, "Use a detoxifying mask once a week to draw out impurities and reduce the risk of breakouts that can arise from accumulated dirt and toxins." After masking, a soothing toner can help restore the skin's balance and prevent irritation.

6. Nighttime Repair and Healing

At night, focus on repair by applying treatments with peptides, retinol, or bakuchiol to support cellular turnover and reduce pollution-induced damage. Dr Bambroo highlights the importance of targeting the under-eye area as well. "Use a cream with caffeine or vitamin K to reduce dark circles caused by fatigue and pollution."

7. Consider Advanced Treatments

For those seeking extra rejuvenation, advanced treatments like Profhilo offer a pollution-proofing boost. "Profhilo delivers a high concentration of pure hyaluronic acid to the skin, intensely hydrating and firming without adding volume," says Dr Bambroo. This injectable treatment enhances elasticity and texture from within, perfect for areas prone to pollution exposure, like the face and hands. "Profhilo promotes collagen and elastin production, making it ideal for Diwali if you want an extra edge in your skincare."

8. Stay Hydrated and Eat Well

Good skin care also involves proper hydration and a balanced diet. Dr Bambroo suggests drinking plenty of water to flush toxins, and eating foods high in antioxidants like berries, greens, and nuts, which bolster your skin’s defenses from within. "Omega-3 fatty acids in fish, flaxseeds, and walnuts keep your skin supple and help it resist the drying effects of pollution."
