Have a sweet tooth? Can’t resist sugar? You might love to have sweet dishes in your meal, but it is important to note that sweet dishes can increase sugar levels in your body immensely. As we all know consuming too much sugar can put you at a high risk of diabetes and other heart diseases. Check out these five warning signs by Dietician Vidhi Chawla, Founder of Fisico Diet Clinic, that indicate you are having too much sugar.
Once you consume sugary food, it gets converted to glucose leading to insulin spike. Too much sugar intake leads to inflammation, excess oil production, secretion of androgen leading to excessive acne. It’s important to note that people who consume too much sugar are prone to recurring acne. Insulin spike also leads to clogged pores causing dull and tired skin. If you experience a sudden increase in acne and breakouts, limit your sugar consumption and see if it is making any positive difference.
2) Weight gain
When it comes to sugar, one has to be concerned about the term “added sugar”. Natural sugars like the ones present in fruits and milk products can be consumed regularly as they are high in vitamins, minerals, calcium etc., but one should avoid processed and canned food. Sugary food is digested quickly by the body making you feel hungry very often leading to weight gain. Sugary foods are loaded with high amounts of calories and you miss out on important nutrients leading to weight gain.
3) Feeling tired and irritated
High in sugar foods without proteins or fats spikes your blood sugar levels instantly, thereby making it difficult for your body to process it. Your energy levels crash down, which makes you feel irritated and tired. White sugar releases cytokines causing inflammation. It also releases Orexin making you feel sleepy and tired.
You must have noticed that whenever you consume something too sweet, you end up feeling lethargic. This is because sugar impacts your energy levels when consumed in excess.
4) Feel hungry all the time
When you consume too much white sugar or sugary food, your body burns up sugar quickly making you feel hungry in a short period of time. Even though sugar can be satisfying for your taste buds, it doesn’t make your stomach happy due to the lack of proteins, nutrients, fibers etc. Sugary items may also lead to compulsive eating. You may end up eating more than what is required by the body.
5) Sleep issues
Your sleep patterns may also get interrupted when you consume a lot of sugar. Excessive sugar intake spikes your insulin leading to release of adrenaline and cortisol, which triggers your sleep. One needs magnesium for sleep and sugar uses a lot of magnesium causing sleep issues. Thus, you must avoid sugar especially at night to not interfere with your sleep schedule.
Henceforth next time, you experience any of the signs above, have a look at your diet and become conscious about the amount of sugar you are consuming. If you have too much sugar and want to flush it out of the body, drink plenty of water.
