According to the World Health Organization (WHO), more than seven lakh fatalities from stroke and ischemic heart disease were caused by long work hours in 2016, a 29% rise from 2000. Working long hours is currently recognised as the risk factor with the highest occupational illness burden, accounting for nearly one-third of the estimated total work-related disease burden. 

Significance Of Quality Sleep

Proper sleep is a fundamental requirement for the body, as essential as exercise, food, and water. Dr Satya, “Deep sleep plays a crucial role in the production of vital chemicals, such as serotonin and adrenaline. These chemicals are responsible for various functions in the body, and their deficiency can lead to migraines, irritable bowel syndrome, neurological pain, and reduced attention span.”

Disruption of the Circadian Rhythm

Dr Satya said, “Our bodies operate on a clock, with our sleep-wake cycle following a natural pattern. As darkness falls and we sleep, the body produces growth hormones like melatonin while reducing steroid levels.” Maintaining this balance is crucial for leading a healthy lifestyle. However, when our sleep pattern is disturbed and the circadian rhythm is altered, it can have both short-term and long-term health implications.

A lack of proper sleep can result in daytime sleepiness, making activities like driving dangerous. It can also lead to feelings of anxiety, panic, palpitations, and reduced attention span. These immediate consequences can significantly impact our performance and overall well-being.
