Diabetes is a chronic condition that occurs either when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or when the body is unable to use insulin properly. Insulin is a hormone that helps manage blood sugar levels in the body. So, if the body does not make sufficient amounts of insulin or isn't able to process it effectively, blood sugar levels may fluctuate, causing concerns for people with diabetes. Hence, regularly tracking blood sugar levels is crucial for diabetes patients.

But what about healthy individuals? Is frequent blood sugar tracking also necessary for them? Here's what an expert has to say.

Should Non-Diabetics Track Blood Sugar Levels?

“For most healthy individuals, routine blood sugar tracking is not necessary,” says Dr Rahul Chauda, Senior Consultant—Endocrinology, Yashoda Super Speciality Hospital Kaushambi. However, certain people, such as those with a family history of diabetes, a sedentary lifestyle, or metabolic concerns, may benefit from periodic monitoring to identify potential risks early.

Tracking blood sugar levels may also reveal how your body responds to different foods and activities, which can in turn support better metabolic health. Additionally, it can help individuals make informed dietary choices, optimise meal timing, and prevent sudden spikes or crashes, Dr Chauda adds.

Getting regular blood sugar tests can also help find out if you have prediabetes, which is reversible with lifestyle changes, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

“If someone notices persistent abnormalities, they should consult a healthcare provider for further evaluation, including an HbA1c test or an oral glucose tolerance test,” advises Dr Chauda.

How Often Should Healthy Individuals Check Their Blood Sugar?

For individuals without diabetes or risk factors, routine blood sugar checks are generally unnecessary. However, those interested in optimising their metabolic health can consider occasional monitoring, such as after high-carb meals or periods of inactivity, to understand how their body responds. If there are concerns about metabolic health, a doctor may recommend more structured screening.

Tips To Maintain Stable Blood Sugar

Dr Chauda recommends eating a balanced diet rich in fibre, lean proteins, and healthy fats, along with regular physical activity. “Prioritising whole, unprocessed foods, managing stress, staying hydrated, and getting quality sleep also support metabolic health," he says, concluding that for most people, these lifestyle habits are more beneficial than frequent blood sugar monitoring.
