Dalvi, aged 86, was admitted to Lilavati Hospital in Mumbai around 8 October 2025. According to reports, he began experiencing extreme pain and sudden loss of limb mobility, prompting immediate hospitalisation. “That’s when we got to know it was a sepsis infection, which has affected all his joints. And since the infection is now in his blood, the recovery has been extremely slow,” said Dalvi’s wife, Suhas Dalvi.

The family has already spent nearly ₹10 lakh in medical bills, and estimates suggest up to ₹15 lakh may be required for his full treatment. Fans and fellow artistes are rallying around as some have offered financial help and moral support.

What is Sepsis? Understanding the Silent Killer

Sepsis is a life-threatening condition caused by the body’s extreme response to an infection. In one of our previous articles, Dr Shrey Srivasatava, Senior Consultant in Internal Medicine at Sharda Hospital, Greater Noida, explained that normally, the immune system fights infection cleanly, but in sepsis, it becomes overactive. He explains that chemicals released cause widespread inflammation and damage to tissues and organs. Without early treatment, it can quickly become fatal.

It begins when an infection triggers a chain reaction throughout the body, leading to organ damage and failure. Early symptoms include fever, increased heart rate, rapid breathing, confusion, and extreme discomfort.

Sepsis progresses quickly and requires urgent medical treatment. Common complications include septic shock, where blood pressure drops dangerously low. Effective treatment often involves antibiotics, intravenous fluids, and sometimes surgery to remove the infection source.

What This Means for Dalvi and His Treatment

Given his age and the severity of his condition, the medical team faces multiple challenges. An 86-year-old battling systemic infection typically requires intensive care, close monitoring of organ function, and aggressive antibiotic treatment.

His family’s appeal for assistance underscores how even prominent figures may struggle with the financial burden of such a critical illness. Earlier stages of sepsis can be treated effectively with prompt intervention; later stages often demand long intensive-care stays and incur high costs.
