What Causes Acne During Pregnancy?
According to a 2017 study published in the journal Der Hautarzt, pregnancy acne affects over 40% of all expecting moms.
One of the common culprits is hormonal changes. During pregnancy, women experience a surge in the production of hormones like progesterone, which can trigger oil glands to go into overdrive, producing more sebum or oil.
This, in turn, clogs pores, creating the perfect environment for bacteria to grow and lead to breakouts.
The above-mentioned study also suggests that up to 90% of pregnancy acne occurs in women who already have a history of skin breakouts.
What To Expect (Acne-Wise) When You're Expecting?
Pregnancy-related acne is no different from regular acne. They are characterised by small skin bumps that may show up in acne-prone areas, such as the face, chest, shoulders, and/or back.
According to research, 87% of expecting mothers experience acne on their trunk, which includes your back, chest, abdomen, and pelvis. The study also notes that 69% have skin breakouts in the chin area, and 14% end up developing them on their forehead.

How To Treat and Manage Pregnancy Acne?
Pregnancy-related acne is harmless. However, if you want to get rid of it, there are a few tips that can help:
- Wash your face twice daily with gentle cleanser and warm water.
- Skip harsh scrubs and astringents that irritate the skin.
- Shampoo regularly, especially if you get breakouts near the hairline.
- Resist the urge to pick or squeeze blemishes.
- Avoid oil-based products like makeup, sunscreen, and hairspray.
- Choose water-based, non-comedogenic skincare products.
- Keep your hair clean and off your face.
- Don't touch your face with your hands or objects.
- Avoid tight clothing or hats that trap sweat and oil.
In general, protecting your skin by avoiding tanning, seeking shade, wearing sunscreen, and refraining from going outdoors at peak hours is crucial, according to the American Academy of Dermatology Association (AADA).
"Acne takes time to clear. If you keep seeing breakouts after following these tips, partner with a board-certified dermatologist. Dermatologists can treat existing acne, prevent new breakouts from forming, and reduce your chance of developing scars," the health body said.
