In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) is a remarkable medical procedure that offers hope and the possibility of parenthood to couples struggling with infertility. While IVF can be an exciting and transformative journey, it is also known to be physically and emotionally challenging.
The stress and anxiety associated with the IVF process can take a toll on mental well-being. Therefore, incorporating self-care practices during IVF can be immensely beneficial in managing stress and fostering a positive experience.
In our exclusive campaign, #KhushKhabriWithIVF, we spoke to Dr Sarada M, Senior Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, Yashoda Hospitals, Hyderabad, to learn about essential self-care tips that can help individuals navigate the IVF journey.
Why Taking Care of Mental Health is Important During IVF Journey?
Upon comparing women who had undergone IVF treatment to a reference group, a study published in the BMJ Journal observed that the IVF women reported higher levels of depressive, obsessive-compulsive, and somatisation symptoms.
The follow-up period of the study extended over 20-23 years. This study stands as one of the limited research efforts exploring the long-term mental health outcomes of women who have undergone IVF.

Tips To Manage Stress During IVF Treatment
By following these expert-recommended tips, you can minimise the negative impact of stress and maintain balance and well-being during your IVF journey.
Assess Priorities
"Evaluate your readiness, physically, mentally, and emotionally, before taking on new commitments. Clear your schedule of non-essential tasks during IVF to reduce anxiety and increase the chances of success," said Dr Sarada.
Get the Basics Right
According to Dr Sarada, this step includes having faith in your doctor, gaining sound knowledge about the procedure, and trusting the process.
Be Kind to Yourself
"Embrace the reality of infertility treatment, fostering internal positivity that acts as a natural stress buster," suggested the doctor.
Practice Meditation and Yoga
"You should practise meditation to alleviate stress during the infertility journey," said Dr Sarada. "Starting yoga six weeks before the IVF cycle can help overcome anxiety, while also preparing your body for pregnancy and labour," she added.
Foster Proper Communication
"Maintain open communication with your partner or someone who can lend a listening ear, making the journey smoother, and more manageable," she stressed.
Nourish Your Body
"Be mindful of your diet, exercise regularly, and stay hydrated. Focus on a clean diet with green leafy vegetables, fruits, and fertility-boosting foods as advised by your doctor," added Dr Sarada.

Pamper Yourself
"Engage in leisure activities, walks, massages, or take a holiday to keep stress and anxiety at bay. You can consider acupuncture to aid in healing your body during this time," said the doctor.
Quit Smoking and Alcohol
"Eliminate smoking and alcohol consumption, as they can negatively impact fertility and overall well-being," suggested Dr Sarada.
Maintain a Positive Outlook
"While IVF enhances the chances of conception, it's not a guarantee. Thus, stay optimistic and set realistic expectations to manage stress and worries effectively," she said.
Prioritise Sleep
"Ensure you get enough restful sleep, as it is crucial for both physical and emotional stability during IVF," said the doctor.
Conclusion
Dr Sarada concluded that during IVF, women face various problems, and their male partners should be supportive and caring throughout the process. Remember, taking good care of yourselves is vital on the journey from infertility to motherhood, as good things are bound to happen.
