We sat down with Dr Anil Thakwani, Consultant and Senior Oncologist at Shardacare-Health City - Noida, to understand the best ways to heal and live well after cancer treatment.

"Chemotherapy is a powerful tool, but it's just one piece of the puzzle," Dr Thakwani explains with a warm smile. "True recovery involves taking care of your whole self–your body, your mind, and your spirit."

So, what does this "whole self" care look like? Dr Thakwani shared his top recommendations. Here is what he shared with us:

1. Nourish Your Body From Within

Think of food as medicine. Dr Thakwani emphasises the importance of a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein. "After treatment, your body needs extra support to rebuild and regain strength," he says. "Focus on colourful foods packed with vitamins and minerals. Limit processed foods, sugary drinks, and excessive red meat." He also suggests consulting a nutritionist who can create a personalised eating plan.

2. Move Your Body Gently

While you might feel tired after treatment, gentle exercise can make a big difference. "Start slow and listen to your body," advises Dr Thakwani. "Walking, yoga, or swimming can improve your energy levels, strengthen your muscles, and even boost your mood." He recommends talking to your doctor or a physical therapist to create a safe and effective exercise routine.

3. Prioritise Your Mental Well-being

Cancer and its treatment can take a toll on your emotional health. Dr Thakwani stresses the importance of addressing these feelings. "It's completely normal to experience anxiety, sadness, or fear," he assures. "Don't hesitate to seek support from therapists, support groups, or trusted friends and family." He highlights the benefits of mindfulness practices like meditation and deep breathing to manage stress.

4. Embrace Rest and Sleep

Your body does a lot of healing while you sleep. Dr Thakwani advises creating a consistent sleep schedule and a relaxing bedtime routine. "Aim for seven to nine hours of quality sleep each night," he recommends. "A well-rested body is better equipped to recover and fight off any lingering effects of treatment."

5. Stay Connected and Build Your Support System

Facing cancer alone can be incredibly challenging. Dr Thakwani emphasises the power of connection. "Lean on your loved ones for support," he encourages. "Join support groups where you can connect with others who understand what you're going through. Sharing your experiences can be incredibly healing."

Even after treatment ends, regular check-ups with your oncologist are crucial. Dr Thakwani explains, "These appointments help us monitor your progress, address any new concerns, and ensure that you're staying on the right track." Don't hesitate to ask questions and be an active participant in your ongoing care.
