Sidhu's Diet Cure for Cancer Raises Concerns: Expert Advocates For Evidence-Based Treatment

In a recent press conference, cricketing legend and former Punjab Congress Chief, Navjot Singh Sidhu, made headlines by claiming that his wife, Navjot Kaur Sidhu, had overcome Stage IV breast cancer despite only having a 3% survival rate. According to Sidhu, his wife is now clinically cancer-free, a recovery he attributes to her adherence to a strict diet regimen during and after her treatment. However, Sidhu’s statements have raised concerns among medical professionals, who caution the public not to be swayed by unverified claims.

We spoke to Dr Harit Chaturvedi, Chairman, Max Institute of Cancer Care, who emphasised that cancer treatment is a multi-faceted approach that combines evidence-based medical therapies rather than relying solely on diet-based regimens.

Sidhu described how his wife’s recovery was not fueled by wealth but by her dedication to a disciplined routine. He emphasised that cancer treatment can be effective even in government hospitals. According to Sidhu, Navjot Kaur’s diet consisted of health-promoting foods, such as lemon water, raw turmeric, apple cider vinegar, neem leaves, and tulsi. She also included nutrient-rich foods in her meals, such as citrus fruits, pumpkin, pomegranate, amla, beetroot, and walnuts.

Understanding Cancer Treatment

cancer

Cancer is not a single disease, but a collection of diseases that vary greatly in their behavior, severity, and response to treatment. “The standard cancer treatment, as guided by modern medicine, has led to a cure in more than 80% of the cases, which are present in the early stages of the disease. Even in stages III & IV, almost 50% of all cases are curable today,” said Dr Chaturvedi.

According to the American Cancer Society, there are various treatments and medications available for cancer, with many more currently being researched. Some treatments, like surgery and radiation therapy, are considered 'local' as they target a specific tumour or area of the body. On the other hand, drug treatments, such as chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and targeted therapy are referred to as 'systemic' treatments because they can impact the entire body.

“The treatment approach is determined by factors, such as the cancer subtype, genetic mutations in the cancer cells, the organ where the cancer originated, how far the disease has spread at diagnosis, and various other tumour and patient-specific factors,” added Dr Chaturvedi. The treatment plan is generally made by a group of experts from multiple disciplines of medicine who deliberate and tailor a plan for each situation.

While Navjot Kaur Sidhu’s recovery is undoubtedly a remarkable story, doctors across the country are raising concerns about Sidhu’s portrayal of the treatment process. "It is crucial to recognise that Mrs Sidhu’s successful outcome is a result of the standard oncological treatments, chemotherapy, surgery, and radiation, administered by a team of experienced oncologists. Her positive outcome is a testament to the progress of modern medicine and the effectiveness of scientifically proven treatments,” said Dr Chaturvedi.

“It's unfortunate that the scare of cancer has led to several myths, and Siddhu is also adding to this list by presenting his one case and a hundred-day experience in a press conference and not in a scientific forum for scientific scrutiny of his assumptions,” added Dr Chaturvedi.

Dangers of Misleading Narratives

“Sidhu’s story, though hopeful, lacks the necessary scientific validation to be considered as evidence in the broader discussion of cancer treatment. We urge the public not to be misled by stories that lack scientific evidence and data validation,” highlighted Dr Chaturvedi.

He added, “The patients and families going through cancer treatment are generally more vulnerable and cling to anything that gives them more hope. Such half-baked stories with small short-term experiences presented as scientific evidence are doing a lot of harm to our society”.

Bottomline

The ongoing battle against cancer requires both compassion and careful attention to evidence-based medicine. While individual stories of recovery are inspiring, they should not be mistaken for general solutions. “This is a serious illness, and we all need to act with caution with evidence and in a deliberate manner. All stories should be presented in public domains only after scientific validation,” Dr Chaturvedi concluded.
