Narcissistic personality disorder, which is commonly known as narcissism is a kind of psychological condition, which makes a person self-obsessed. Narcissist personalities urge for admiration and power. They think to be entitled to special treatment and desire to be the apple of everyone’s eye. They expect everyone to function as per their expectations and are known to be selfish. Overconfidence and never fading self-love stand atop some of the characteristics of a real narcissist. Let’s turn the table. What you think may about narcissists is perhaps only a myth. Various myths associated with narcissism are heard of. Take a look at these facts on narcissistic personality disorder.

Myth 1— Narcissism is healthy self-love.

Fact— It’s a popular notion that ‘you have to love yourself to love someone else‘, but if you are in excessive self-love, as people with narcissistic personality disorder are,  there won’t be any love left for others. Narcissists are self-obsessed and are often known as non-caring relationship partners.  A narcissistic personality yearns for attention and admiration, thus fails to acknowledge other’s emotions. They lack empathy for others and wish to complete their wishes at the expense of others. Narcissism is not healthy self-love, it is selfishness!

Myth 2— A bit of narcissism is harmless and healthy.

Fact— Narcissism is never healthy and pertains to create issues in personal and professional relationships. It may help the narcissist to achieve goals in short-term, but in the long-term, he may fall prey to depression and other mental health conditions.

Myth 3— Narcissists are insecure and have low self-esteem.

Fact— It is a common assumption that people suffering from narcissistic personality disorder are insecure deep down or are self-haters, however, it is untrue. Narcissists are in awe of themselves and believe that they’re genius. Their high self-esteem is the real problem behind their superior behaviour.

Myth 4— To become successful, narcissism is essential.

Fact— There is no association between narcissism and success. Your self-esteem doesn’t carve a way to success. Narcissism is linked to being successful because successful narcissists such as Paris Hilton and Donald  Trump are greatly visible to people, but there are equally successful people with no visibility on social platforms. Moreover,  narcissists lack patience and  take hasty decisions.

Myth 5— There exists a reason for being narcissistic.

Fact— This may hold true in a few cases, but on a larger scale, narcissists are like everyone expect that they believe themselves to be truly great and prodigious. They think of themselves to be stupendously intelligent and beautiful, however, unfortunately, the data doesn’t approve of this. They rate themselves higher than others and hold no comparison. They assume themselves to be legends. When the IQ test of narcissists were compared with that of normal people, the former had been rated as averagely bestowed with intelligence.
