The ill effects of regularly using mouthwash have long been debated. Especially in a country like India, where home remedies and herbal solutions are deeply ingrained in every household, cosmetic formulas like mouthwash anyway receive a lot of flak.
Supporting this sentiment, during OnlyMyHealth’s Poshan Summit 2023, Swati Bathwal, Diabetes Educator and Public Health Specialist provided insight into why commercial mouthwash might be even worse than what you've heard till now. She warned, "Mouthwash has a compound called ethanol which immediately turns into acetaldehyde when it comes into contact with the metabolising bacteria in the mouth. Acetaldehyde is a cancer-causing compound, so a simple practice like using a mouthwash regularly puts you at an increased risk of getting cancer."
Alternatives To Alcohol-Based Mouthwash
A study published by the Frontiers Research Foundation informed that acetaldehyde is a potentially toxic and deterrent substance, and high levels of this substance compel the brain to consume more and more of acetaldehyde.
Additionally, Bathwal highlighted, “Alcohol-based mouthwash also kills the good bacteria in our mouth, which turn nitrogen into nitric oxide which is protective for our heart.”
Despite the lack of studies on mouthwash causing cancer, many certified experts such as Bathwal have been sharing about the possible adverse effects of using mouthwash daily. Hence, exploring alternative and natural methods to improve your oral health seems a practical option.
Saltwater Rinse
Saltwater can help soothe gum irritation, reduce inflammation, and kill bacteria. Mixing half a teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water creates a simple and effective mouth rinse.
Baking Soda Rinse
Baking soda, when diluted in water, can be used as a mouth rinse. It can help neutralise acids in the mouth, remove plaque, and freshen breath.
Hydrogen Peroxide Rinse
A diluted hydrogen peroxide solution (usually 1-2%) can be used as a mouthwash to kill bacteria and whiten teeth. Be sure to follow dilution instructions and avoid swallowing it as hydrogen peroxide is highly potent and can stain your teeth in addition to inflaming your mouth lining.
Antiseptic Mouthwash (Alcohol-Free)
If you prefer a commercial mouthwash, look for alcohol-free options that contain antiseptic ingredients like chlorhexidine or cetylpyridinium chloride. These can help kill bacteria without the drying effects of alcohol.
Natural Mouthwash
Many natural and herbal mouthwashes are available that use ingredients like aloe vera, tea tree oil, and essential oils (e.g., peppermint, spearmint, or eucalyptus) to promote oral health and fresh breath.
Oil Pulling
This involves swishing a tablespoon of coconut oil or another edible oil in your mouth for 15-20 minutes. It's believed to remove bacteria and improve oral health.

Water
Drinking water throughout the day helps wash away food particles and bacteria, preventing dry mouth and maintaining oral health.
No matter how beneficial your mouthwash is, it should never replace regular brushing and flossing. As there are no current studies that support the ‘mouthwash causes cancer’ theory yet, it is advised to take this advice with a grain of salt. There has to be some truth to a fact that has forever been preached by multitudes of experts. In case you notice anything unusual with your oral cavity, do not jump to conclusions. Instead, consult with your dentist or oral healthcare professional to determine which oral care products and practices are best suited for your specific needs and any underlying oral health issues you may have.
