Who Was Gary “Mani” Mounfield?

Mani was born in Crumpsall, Manchester, in 1962. He rose to fame in the early 1980s when he joined a band that would become The Stone Roses. Their self-titled debut album came out in 1989 and remains one of the most influential records in British indie rock.

When The Stone Roses first split in 1996, Mani didn’t sit still as he joined Primal Scream, playing on key albums like Vanishing Point (1997), XTRMNTR (2000), Evil Heat (2002), and more. He rejoined The Stone Roses in 2011, and they performed together until their final split in 2017.

He was known for his groovy, melodic bass lines as his play style deeply shaped the “Madchester” sound, a musical era that fused rock, psychedelia, and dance music. On top of that, he was part of the bass supergroup Freebass alongside Peter Hook (New Order) and Andy Rourke (The Smiths).

Mani is survived by his twin sons, Gene and George, whom he had with his late wife Imelda.  Imelda passed away in November 2023 from bowel cancer, and the family had previously raised funds for cancer charities.
