Pregnancy brings happiness in a woman’s life where she eagerly waits for her child to come in her arms. The period of nine months is very crucial which tests the patience of the mother. While sonography keeps a check on the health and growth of the baby in the womb, kick counting is another way to monitor your unborn’s wellbeing. Doctors suggest pregnant ladies to start counting the kicks soon after entering the 28th week of the pregnancy. The frequency of the baby’s kick tells a lot about his health.

What is Baby Kick Counting?

Counting kicks of the baby in the womb at regular intervals is called kick counting. This is very simple as you have to just closely monitor how many times the baby kicks or punches or tumbles. This helps you to keep a tab on his proper growth. This is safe and easy than at-home fetal monitoring. This is a great primary screening method to monitor fetal health. Any change in the pattern may indicate that something isn’t right, though you need not panic in such a case. It is better to consult a doctor and get an ultrasound done.

Helpful tips to count the kicks

1. Start counting after the 28th week

Your baby would start moving after the 28th week. Counting before that would be of no use. Baby’s movements become consistent and predictable after 27 weeks. However, ladies with a troubled pregnancy may start counting from the 26th week.

2. Count when the baby is active

Counting makes sense when the child is active. You can feel the fetal movements. Just analyze when your kid is the most active, count his kicks at that time only. A lot of ladies start to panic due to lesser movements during counting as the baby is resting.

3. Count when you are in a comfortable position

It is suggested that you do kick counting when you are in a relaxed mode. Your concentration should be totally on the baby’s moves as it will help you do the right counting. Never do this while doing any household chores or other stuff. During this exercise, any kind of distraction may lead to missing of the movement of baby kicks.

4.  Check the duration of 10 moves

This is an important part of kick counting. Note down the total time your baby takes to move 10 times. It may range from 30 minutes to 2 hours.

What Are The Risks?

  • If you can’t feel the kicks of the baby, see your doctor. They can help you find the reason behind this. Don’t panic unless there is some serious issue.
  • Fewer movements may also be caused if your baby isn’t receiving enough oxygen. Make sure that you’re doing any exercise which might trigger this condition.
  • If the kick count drastically increases or decreases.
